Oh the rain...

So I'm a pretty sad picture right now....drinking wine and wearing my new ski boots around the house, wishing it wasn't raining. :(

Haylmom,

No better in Toronto. Grass in green.....so sad.....if it's any comfort, I'm joining you in the wine drinking.....

I've been riding my bike to work twice this week. Contemplating whether to go for a long ride tomorrow... ;-)

Happy to hear! (only about the wine though...)

I hear our conditions aren't TOO bad at the hill though...lessons are still on for tomorrow, that's good!

The problem is that it's definitely going to get cold again -- and then we can start defining our snow pack as per the 200 names for snow thread, i.e., boilerplate, blue ice, etc........I'm definitely hanging it up temporarily - currently do not own any rock skis and not in any hurry to "create" a pair. Time to catch up on stuff that's been neglected since BT (before thaw)...not even in any hurry to see the damage, given that both resorts I frequent were 100% open (even all glades and snowfields) as recently as Monday....and now, most of my favorite regular trails aren't even open. Time to clean carpets...?? What fun. Our weekend company is ready and willing - and they know the road.

Similar situation over here. A few places closed for a few days, temps dipped back down and now it's mad icy. I'm just chiding myself because I hadn't gotten to go out since 12/22 which was before the hill was 100 percent open. Eventually it got going at a hundred percent and as soon as I was able to get back out there we had the thaw and the hill became soup, opened back up Wednesday with just a few runs. Pics from January near New Year's looked great though, so hopefully we'll be looking like that again soon!

All you other divas with soupy hills stay positive, we've got a few months to look forward to.

Don't despair, ladies, they're calling for snow Sunday night/Monday here in Vermont. And a return to what they call a "winter pattern." Plus with MLK weekend coming up, you know that whoever has snowmaking is going to be blasting the guns.

Here's hoping things get better! :snow:

Tremblant starting making as soon as the temp dropped yesterday. DH is up there and said that it had started and its empty. Only the locals. I said wait until the weekend. I was suppose to help at a Rossi demo for the store today, but they closed the hill. So, like MaineSkiLady I'm cleaning house, catching up on work stuff and going to rest. Got the cold too!! If the wine didn't interfere with the cough med I be there with you Haylmom!

We stayed in NH, didn't go to VT. I can hope that the snow that's forecasted actually comes. I think it will take a while for the northeast to recover from this thaw. Like many of you, I'm catching up on neglected housework. I hate to say it, but I still have to put away some Christmas stuff since we spent New Years week skiing in VT.

I might just suck it up and go ski the boilerplate tomorrow anyway. Won't look too much, long or hard at the damage. Except that most of the runs I skied last weekend are now closed....

Today I made Lemonade! Snow (nasty little sugary mix)was sketchy enough to cancel race group this morning! Wasn't quite deep enough to set gates on it safely, too much rain earlier this week. :( Skied until 12:30pm, decided to make the most of the warm weather. Went to the barn and took my favorite girl " The Bodacious Miss Bunny" for a good old fashioned hack-out! I was worried that she would throw a shoe in the woods (mud) so we stuck to the dirt roads. Way to nice to ride inside!! Then I went home dropped my Kayak in the lake for a short paddle. I got to do three of my most favorite things in one day! All and all I thought today was pretty great! Of course if I woke up tomorrow and had all of our snow back, you know I wouldn't be complaining! As for catching up on my house work, I'll take care of that in May! Maybe! Lol!

Snow is coming! Snow is coming! Snow is COMING!!!:snow:

I REALLLY hope these forecasts are correct... Should reopen Blue Hills... Heck maybe I'll take a ski day if certain things work out this week to celebrate.

But indeed I feel the pain. So sad to look at my yard now completely devoid of any snow, after it had had a nice coating on and off since November... The only good news is that I was able to check the status of my summer plantings and all look good. Tomorrow I need to cover up my blue-feathers Hinoki Cypress in prep for the new storm.

We were thinking of skipping skiing yesterday (our driveway was a skating rink, figured the mountain would be the same) but decided to go for a few runs anyway. It was actually much better than I expected, pretty decent snow cover all things considered. It was that hard groomed stuff they like to call "packed powder" with a few patches of ice here and there. Anyway, we just skied for the morning and were glad we went. Looking forward to skiing new snow tomorrow!:snow:  Maybe I'll demo some wider skis :becky:

I hit the hills yesterday and it also wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be! It wasn't the "We still have loads of snow left" they were belting on the website, but it was still a decent day! No ice, just soft snow... awaiting more though!!!

Went to Mount Snow today - where the snow fans had hit it was granular over ice. Surprisingly not bad. The mountain has new owners, supposedly committed to making improvements and keeping the mountain skiable as much as possible. So far, so good. They were the first open for the season in Vermont in Nov., which was fun!

Don't worry girls the cold weather is coming with lots of SNOW in a couple hours. Now only if you didn't have to work tomorrow you could just ski all day! I am in MN and the negative degree temperatures are entering the area (-11 in Moorehead). Guess I will be skiing on ice for the next week or so.....

Skied Okemo Saturday and Stratton Sunday. Both mountains did ok with snow management with what they had to work with. Some brown showing on open trails, some trails closed, loose granular, ice marbles and boilerplate made for intriguing runs. Still managed to ski most of both days!

My overall assessment:
- mtns sure lost a lot of base
- mtns still have waaayyy more snow now than they did at this point last year
- the snow for this week will only make a minor improvement
- hate to say it but for the near term I suggest sticking with the mtns known for grooming and snowmaking. It may be deadly at other areas for a while.

Even while I think the above, I am going to continue heading for the hills as often as possible and make the best of it.

The forecast is for nearly a foot of snow!

I don't know if anyone noticed or even bother to keep track of. But I'm more into weather forecasting because I used to work for in that area... This season's snow forecast has consistantly be underestimating the total.

So, I'm keeping a close watch on the storm total tomorrow (today!).

Depends on where you are. This is a coastal event. Inland regions, especially here in Maine, are only forecast to get 3-6". That will essentially mean "dust-over-crust" up here. Which is fine, still better than nothing. But the assessment to stay with high-snowmaking areas is a good one, because even 12" - over dirt - goes away pretty fast and can be treacherous: witness Ski Diva's major gouge in new skis, and that was before this thaw. DH did a minor version of same last weekend, not as deep but ptex-worthy.

Now watching system due in here Thurs-Fri.

Snowing here this AM in Ontario. 1-2" is all they are calling for today. But better than nothing. And its not really cold enough to make snow at the local bump during the day. Night temps will be better. As for Tremblant, DH said they were blowing last night. Nor-Am Boardercross race this weekend, so they need to get ready.
