Nurturing Minds

As some of you know, I am a Board member of a new non-profit organization called Nurturing Minds (see website at https://www.nurturingmindsinafrica.com) Nurturing Minds is raising money to help build schools for girls in Tanzania in Africa. Due to the AIDS crisis, the majority of girls in Tanzania do not continue their education past the 7th grade. It is also sad to note that girls can be married as young as 12 years old with parental consent.

Girls who finish high school earn 4 times the salaries of their peers and have significantly fewer children. The more educated girls are, the more financially stable their children become, which in turn raises the standard of living for the entire community.

Given that this site is dedicated to women who started life as girls, I thought I would just mention this organization to bring it to your attention. Its amazing to think that for as little as $800, we can educate a girl for 2 years.

Anyway, please don't laugh at my photo on the Board of Directors page. It's the same photo as my icon here. I am not the most photogenic person!

Changing the lives of girls in Africa,
Lola

Can you spare two minutes?
Have you seen this video? [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIvmE4_KMNw"]Change our World[/ame]

I am on the Board of a non-profit organization that is changing our world by educating girls in Africa. I would truly appreciate your support. Please join our cause on Facebook at Nurturing Minds or our group at Nurturing Minds or perhaps you would like to visit our website directly at https://www.nurturingmindsinafrica.org/

In any event, I would personally appreciate your support in alleviating poverty in Africa by educating one girl at a time. I would love to hear your thoughts about The Girl Effect video.

Thanks, Lola

Awesome! Thanks so much! I sincerely appreciate your support. I doubt these girls in Africa will ever ski, but at least I can work on providing them with a high school education.

Much of what I read about this brings a tear to my eye. However, any thought that my meager donation can have such an impact is inspiring.

Lola, thanks for carrying the banner and keeping us informed.

For those who may have missed this thread, Lola also posted about a great way to use our gear(and other stuff) purchases to support this and many other great charities.
Take a look at Benevolink!

Good Search and Good Shop - Use them!

Guess what? Nurturing Minds is now part of GoodSearch and GoodShop! Now you can help Nurturing Minds (or your favorite non-profit) just by searching the internet and shopping online. How easy is that!

GoodSearch.com - The search engine with a unique social mission. It's powered by Yahoo!, so you get great search results, and each time you search, GoodSearch makes a donation to Nurturing Minds!

GoodShop.com - The new online marketplace that donates a percentage of your purchase to Nurturing Minds. You can choose from hundreds of popular merchants and the experience of shopping through GoodShop is exactly the same as going to the retailer's websites directly.

So why not give Good Search and Good Shop a try and help support educating girls in Africa! It's a great way to help a great cause. Of course, you may consider helping a different cause that is nearer and dearer to your heart.

Oh, cool, GoodShop is a great idea. Amazon's on there, Expedia's on there -- I will definitely use this.

There's a similar site for wedding registries -- https://www.idofoundation.org. You can either just ask people to donate to a charity for your gift, or you can set it up so X% of the value of things people buy you go to the charity you choose. You should get Nurturing Minds listed on there if it isn't already.

Like good wine? Looking for some for the Holidays?

Clark-Claudon Vineyards in St. Helena is offering a special opportunity this coming holiday that is truly in the spirit of giving.

Their Cabernet for Care program is available to individuals as well as corporations who are interested in both great wine and outreach. The customer receives world class wine for themselves or for personal/corporate gifts, while at the same time, a donation is made to a worthy cause.

Clark-Claudon has offered to donate 50% of all proceeds from the sales of their 2004 Estate Cabernet to six select non-profits. Nurturing Minds, which is raising funds to educate girls in Tanzania who would otherwise not be able to attend school due to extreme poverty, is one of this year's non-profit organizations. We are really excited that Clark-Claudon Vineyards has adopted our program as part of their “Cabernet for Care” outreach for 2008/2009 and are hoping that you might consider purchasing their wine this holiday season either for yourself, a party you are throwing, or as a gift for someone else.

Robert Parker named Clark-Claudon one of the finest producers of Napa Cabernet and the 2004 received the following reviews:

Wine Enthusiast: This is a gorgeous Cabernet… shows the elegant, important mouth feel of a top Napa Cab. 92 points

Quarterly Review of Wine; Best of the Best Cabernet Issue: Placed in Top Ten of 2004 Napa Cabs, “Wine of extraordinary character and quality”

Sante: The Magazine for Restaurant Professionals: “A product of exceptional merit…” Gold Star, their highest score, awarded

Attached is a Clark-Claudon order form. You can order by the case, or by the bottle. And they are offering free shipping!!!

For more information on this special program, you can visit www.clarkclaudon.com/difference.html.

Dear Ski Divas who are supporters of Nurturing Minds,

I wanted to let you know that the 2008 Annual Report is now available on the website at: https://www.nurturingmindsinafrica.org/id55.html

2008 was a great year for our young organization. We were able to raise over $300,000 to build a school in Tanzania. The 30 girls in our day program are grateful for your support, and are very enthusiastic to have the opportunity to continue their studies.

And as you can see from our April newsletter (that you can find at the same link), we are contining to raise money for our ultimate goal, which is to build a boarding school for 300 girls. You can make a donation through our Cause on Facebook, or through the Donate button on our website: www.nurturingmindsinafrica.org .

We also have a new sponsorship program where for as little s $3 a school day (which equals $15 a week, or $60 a month) you can sponsor a girl and help her continue her education. This is a terrific opportunity to make a real difference in her life. Please let me know via private message if you are interested in sponsoring one of our students.

Again, on behalf of the Board of Directors, we thank you for your continued support and commitment to Nurturing Minds! Together with you, we will change our world, one girl at a time.

I know! Isn't it fabulous! In about a year and a nine months, we have raised enough money to build a school for 30 girls, and the girls are so very, very grateful! The school is a boarding school, so they will not have to worry about chores at home or taking care of younger siblings.Instead, they will be able to focus exclusively on their studies.

Now on to the next phase of the project! Our ultimate goal is to build a campus for 300 girls with several buildings including: classrooms, dorms, gymnasium, library, kitchen/mess hall, medical building, computer labs, science labs, music room, etc.
