Well well well boy did we get lucky, the storm that could've easily been the death of our season ended up giving us 50cm of white goodness :snow:

Saturday was THE day of arguably the last 2 years and to make it even better our son joined us for our first family day skiing together in years and to top it all off the sun came out and it was sensational !!

As per usual at DH's behest we were second in the queue to get up the access road while we waited for control work to be completed, it was strange having our son in the car and not out there throwing bombs, before we were all allowed up and huge props to Porters for getting things up and running so quickly, it was the most organised powder day I can ever remember.
All that waiting at the bottom paid off and we were in the first group to get on the lifts which is when I was unceremoniously dumped at the ridge while DH and Son roared off in the first wave of skiers leaving me to my own devices, can I ski powder? Not very well !! Can I ski powder in 85 underfoot beginner ski's ? Even worse :laughter:But hey I did, not very elegantly but I did and it was so much fun.

For our sons first day on ski's this season he sure picked a good one !
Someone on the T Bar took this pic of him enjoying the glory that is first tracks on a powder day here in NZ :ski:b582b180-a74a-4740-a8c9-7f85f1b03477.jpg

Had a pretty good pow day at Mt hutt on Saturday, nice little 20 CMS to liven things up again. My son really wanted to do the moon ski but not on his own so I eventually relented and said I would join him ... Wasn't quite sure what to expect but it was a pretty fun night, the fireworks were fab. And it was amazing watching them as we cruised up the top of the mountain until we were well above them.
After a calm day it was quite windy at the top, combined with the dark ( and debating about goggles on or off!) I decided after two runs to the top I would just stick to the lower mountain and did loads of really cruisey runs under the moonlight... The snow was good as they had groomed it before the moon ski and it was kinda odd relying mostly on feel and not seeing the snow that much.
It was loads of fun and I was surprised I really enjoyed it and lasted almost till the end, especially after skiing all day.
Few piccues attached, you can even see the moon behind us. Oh and finally one of my new jacket, it really does glow!

DH said I had to try and make more than 6 turns and stop, I looked at his ski's (107 underfoot) and boots that were pretty much clear of snow then looked at mine that were both caked in the stuff and told him its ok for him he's skiing on top of it, I'm skiing through and in it !!!
I almost grabbed the BC Atris that they have in rentals but commonsense didnt come into play and I ended battling on with the k2's :laughter:
I'm looking at the Atomic Maven 88CTi as a replacement as I really want to stay under the 90 underfoot due to remaining niggles from my awfully big crash a few years ago.

Another fun day on the planks with yet another cheeky 10-15cm to bounce around in at Porters and bounce around I did, I was too lazy to go down and switch out my ski's so I ended up on my Volkl Flairs 72 trying to muscle my way through the chopped up pow but hey once again they rose to the challenge and pulled through .... might have to re think what it is that I want from a new All Mtn ski as they far out performed my K2 Mindbender 85s that I took out in similar but deeper conditions last Saturday.
I have to say I've really enjoyed skiing them and I've had a blast pushing them into conditions and terrain that they're not really designed to ski .

Speaking of "blasting", although Patrol didn't use explosives to control this morning they did ski cut Bluff Face and its sneaky little pockets of start zones and got some reasonable results , not big but enough to ruin your day if you caught up in one, and a particularly spicy one pulled out of Libra and ran across one of the cat tracks and then some so here's a sneaky pic of me standing on top of the debris ...... to be honest that debris was some some of the best snow on the mountain, all soft and fluffy and ended up being a fun little twisty turny run.

Anyways September has finally delivered the snow we so desperately needed so hurrah for that ! Better late than never :snow:

Sad but true ..... its all over for the season
Mt Hutt have just called closing ... DH is NOT happy as he wanted one last blast this weekend.
Despite promising early snowfalls, this season kind of just limped along not helped by the seemingly ever present winds but hey it was fun and we got some great days in. It was all about the small wins this year.

In true @AJM style I finished off with a crash at Hutt on a suprise powder day last week and ended up with mild concussion, whiplash and a rather fetching imprint of the top of my pole on my nose

Here's hoping all you other Kiwi gals had as much fun as I did and fingers crossed for a great northern hemi season !!

Sounds like you made the best of a lackluster winter.
How many days did you get?

Lackluster is a great term for it !! We did get some great days and had heaps of fun but as a whole it was pretty "meh", the wind really was the over riding trend and thats what ruined it.
It dosent help that Facebook keeps throwing up memories of seasons past when we were skiing amazing snow well into October !
As for how many days well I came in at a not so record breaking 23

I have the Blaze 94 as well. My go-to western ski!! LOVE.
I can't wait to ski them but I'll have to wait until next year now unless DH springs for a Northern Hemi trip.
Can't get my head around the topsheet colours though ! I think they call it Rose ?? Sheeeesh they look awful with my red boots :laughter:

LOL! I hated that top sheet, so I bought the prior year (2024?) with the solid blue. There was no change in construction between years, so I was very happy to get the "normal" look.

Its truly truly awful !! I'm thinking of getting them spray painted , my brother in law is an aircraft engineer and he could do it for me .... heck airplane grey has to better than "Rose" but I'm not sure if having a layer of paint over them will affect how they ski??

I can't imagine that a layer that thin would make a difference, but I'm not an engineer. Stickers are probably thicker than an industrial adhesive paint and I've seen folks w/skis loaded up w/them from tip to tail.

I'll ask the brother in law and I've also got a friend who's a signwriter and makes those giant stickers, maybe he could do something .... otherwise "Rose" it is !!
