We had probably the best day of the season last Saturday 2nd at Mt hutt.
The snow was actually really good and I spent almost all of first tracks lapping fascination and huarapa, both were amazing (after huarapa being ice and roped off last weekend).
At lunch my son 15year old and partner decided to head off to south face, sons first time and he was scared but pulled through like a trouper! And has the go pro video to prove it.
Me on the other hand decided to give race hill a go, ungroomed and off piste really cos I went along the side of it rather than where the run normally goes... And my first time, a black run, on my own, woohoo! Made it down lol and carried on to international, which wasn't that good but ok. Then finally skied with partner and we did a bit of race hill and then across to do the last bit of towers. Big moments for me!
And one of the best runs was actually going off the morning glory cat track, to the off piste right of fascination. First time I've really down any off piste and the snow was perfect for it. So we did that and race hill/lower towers for a few more runs
Kinda chuffed with myself!

Im not sure where our friend was, he was there on business and as he's in the snow industry he might have gone to more than one. I do know he said our Southern Lakes ski areas are really suffering with the snow drought.
Coincidentally we were talking about 'floating" over the icier parts at Apre on Saturday, its been a common theme so far here

And today is another big moment for me, start a new job, woohoo! It's been a few years since I started a new job, so I'm sitting here having a chilli hot choc as I don't need to start until 9 for the first day. Only downside is that's in the middle of chch city so I drove to rolleston and took the bus, lol... Another first for a few years haha.

Seeing as Christchurch topped out today at 19 degrees celsius and I ended up taking my elderly parents to the beach and the fact that all the ski areas are closed due to wind I thought I'd celebrate the glory of seasons past .. AKA seasons when we actually had snow

Woop woop we got a blue bird "Powder" day at Porters and that is a loose interpretation of Powder A friend who works on Patrol said "if you couldnt ski it before the storm you still can't ski it", I'd clocked where the snow has been hanging around for most of the "season" (and I say that loosely as well !!) so knew where to ski without hitting too many rocks but still managed to find a few, some were not so lucky.
As for the "Powder", it was around 15-20cm of wind pressed fun but still bottoming out onto the ice layer in places esp once it had been skied over a bit, luckily we were some of the first up so got at least 3 really good runs in before the crowds turned up but even then if you knew where to go there was still fresh lines to be had.
We snuck in behind the snow fences in McNulty's and skied what literally felt and sounded like skiing on a plume of polystyrene before entering Nightsnake where there was great untouched dry snow followed by another icy section then out.
With the annual curling competition happening over at Mt Olympus which is just over the back of Porters a friend gathered an adventurous few and organised for the heli that was already in the area to come and pick them up at Longspur (about 1/2 way down the access road), or Chain Bay 3 as its now known, and fly them up over the top for a spot of curling but not before a quick fly over the the ski area.
Whilst we declined the offer to join in we did help with the loading and waved them off before heading down to the Lodge for a refreshing beveridge.
Its been a true Kiwi Clubbie weekend here in Canterbury what with the curling at Mt O and in the true No 8 Wire (a kiwi saying) spirit both Broken River and Craigieburn Valley managed to rally the troops to get at least some of the tows spinning via whatever means they could muster. Yes team we are really back to grassroots skiing this season !
Once again it looks like Mt Hutt scooped the pool and came out on top as far as snow
goes but life's about making memories and the Craigieburns sure did that

So another good day at mt hutt yesterday, snow on piste was excellent at least until it got skied out a bit. First tracks was great, lots of runs done before the crowds hit. And actually not as busy as they seemed to think it would b, given it was a priority car parking day again… seems to have been every weekend this season so far. Even dragged both kids up, although the oldest (16 years) doesn't look much like a kid anymore... Omg that beard!
We stayed until closing this time, unusual for us but we had an ulterior motive motive as my 15 year old was able to get a ride in the groomers after closing… wow what an amazing experience for him, he was elated, a big dream of his to drive groomers one day. And who knows, he may do it. I was so happy for him! And the halarious thing was he almost skied platter splatter, but decided not to, and they ended up grooming it, so he got to do it up and down in the groomer.
Anyway a few pics of the day.

We had a date day at Hutt on Thursday with a mixed bag of weather, white out one minute then bluebird then back to white out, even a few cheeky snowflakes fell at times but it was a fun day then it was back to Porters yesterday to hit the cord first thing, they finally managed to groom Sundance after last weeks "storm" and some judicious harvesting and it was skiing really well, nice and chalky and grippy. Off piste is just NASTY at the moment so groomer zoomers it is.
I've got my Ski Clinic tomorrow so today is a rest day.

It looks very hairy, especially as most these runs the groomers have a winch to help them back up. I think? ( could be wrong?) Platter splatter is one of the steepest groomed runs here at 29 degrees. My son was full of fun facts on the drive home!

Well it looks like we might be getting some sort of "Winter" at the tail end of our season !
We managed to score a near perfect day at Roundhill in Tekapo on Friday while enroute to Wanaka for a significant birthday party.
Our chances didnt look great as we set off in the early hours of Friday morning with a lot of the ski areas closed due to the wind and the stormy conditions but by some miracle Roundhill seemed to escape and we were treated to a brilliant bluebird day with around 5cm of fresh snow (on a very firm base!) and only very light winds until around 2.30pm when they picked up.
We just played around on the groomers for a while then headed out wide to ski the freshies and my new best friends the Volkl Flairs actually did ok in it despite it being a lumpy chopped up mess at this stage, I decided to switch them out for my trusty rehab ski's, the Mindbender 85s, as we went out wider still to ski the untouched freshies (Powder is too strong a word for what it was ) and had a fantastic afternoon just lapping T2.
Both a Norwegian and a US team were training and I was hoping to get a glimpse of Lindsey Vonn as she had been training there earlier last week but they either kept her very well hidden or she'd left.
Fun fact about Roundhill is that it is flat VERY flat in places ie straightlining flat esp as you get off T1 but its still a super fun ski area and perfect for beginners and intermediates and the Von Brown Hut with its incredible views and Schnappes makes all the poleing along worth it.
The infamous Heritage Rope Town wasnt operating much to DH's disappointment so we'll have to go back next time its open so he can say he's done it.
Thoughts of going to Treble Cone were rattling around in our heads on Sunday morning but as everyone in Wanaka and beyond ended up there we're glad we didnt bother and just ended up coming home.
We're buckling down for a stormy week which will hopefully give us all some much needed top ups to get us through the rest of what has been a pretty dire season.
