'New skis for the little woman'

Do you know what makes me shake my head? All those threads on Epicski along the lines of 'I am looking at getting new skis for my wife' and are peppered with phrases such as 'I was thinking...' 'I've heard about...' . Quite often the wife is described as high intermediate or advanced, certainly experienced enough to be chosing her own gear!

What is up with that? Would any self-respecting ski diva let her husband 'choose' skis for her?

That's always bothered me, too.

The only thing I can think of is that the woman involved doesn't want to go on Epic for one reason or another, so he's posting on her behalf (?). Or am I just giving him the benefit of the doubt?

Seriously, though, the thought of having someone else pick out my skis would NEVER enter my mind.

I didn't even buy my 18 year old his skis without consulting him. He tried several models when we were at Winter Park last year and he asked around. When I saw a good deal on skis he had liked I asked if he wanted them as his Christmas present before I actually bought them. They are now sitting in the front hall waiting to be wrapped!

Well, we have the opposite dynamic in my family. No one cares about skiing nearly as much as I do. I choose the skis for everyone! My husband would never think of demoing. I bought him the K2 5500 Escape about 4-5 yrs ago based on Peter Kelty's reviews At RealSkiers. Fortunately, they feel right to him. I found some Head skis on eBay, new, just a season old which was pointed out in the gear forum for my adult son. I found Head Lightenings for my daughter and the Head iC160 for myself on sale for more than 50% off.

In this family, "the little woman" picks all the new skis! (I would be perfectly content to let them do it themselves, if they wanted to)

Yeah, I can't imagine my hubby buying me skis without my input. When he bought me the Attiva AC2's, he wouldn't even make the decision to buy previously used demo skis at a discount or new ones without my input.

I got the new ones. :D

If my husband bought my skis, it would be because he wanted to surprise me, but he would already know what I wanted! ;)

I know there are some women who aren't interested in demoing gear, or reading gear reviews, or asking other people what to buy, but I agree with you, Shellski, that someone who skis as well as "high intermediate or advanced" should be having some input into the decision. But then, I guess you could compare it to a woman who lets her husband pick out her new car. They might think it's a "guy thing" and just let them take care of it?

BTW, my husband knows I want a pair of K2 Missdemeanors in a 169...wonder if they'll show up under the XMas tree?

You and I have participated in many threads on Epic ski contributing to the quality gear purchase for said "little woman". Can you imagine if those husbands/boyfriends hadn't gotten our words of wisdom?

What I find amazing as time goes on is the increase of women who know their equipment, and how to use it.

My husband actually sold my Volkl Vertigo G3's a few years ago, *because I needed new skis* :mad:
There are days I miss my G3's but I have a ton of fun with my quiver of skis, Which were all picked out by ME!

Dawn, you are too funny! It's tempting, but I know we can't really afford them this year, so if he gets them for me, I don't want it to be because I expected it... ;)

SnowHot, you're right. What if those guys weren't getting our good suggestions? Once again, men can't live without us! :D

Is this guy serious? Besides the obvious tastelessness of the title: First, he wants to go cheapo on his wife, like she's not WORTH it to have top-quality gear! :mad: Second, his profile says his home mountain is Alta, and he prefers off-piste terrain, but he only skis 5 days a year? That, of course, is contrary to his claim in his post that they ski locally in Minnesota and spend 5 days a year in PARK CITY which is NOT Alta.

Notice that no ladies have responded. I just can't make myself. But I really, really want to point out all the errors of his ways. Slap me, tie me up and stop me before I make a fool of him! :p
