New ski: K2 Apache Recon

missyd

I visited a lot of ski shops and searched for Lotta or Burning Luv model. All shops do not have them anymore in stock! So I bought another pair of ski from K2 .... its the 163cm Apache Recon .... nice graphic and I the ski will be much better suited for me than the first luv .... I'll write a 'test-report' as soon as I return from my next ski trip.

Cool Missyd! You know, not for nothing, but from what I understand the Lotta Luv's are pretty much the Apache Recon for "women." I hope you have a good time on them.

I thought the same when I checked the K2 catalogue .... the biggest difference is the flex of the ski vs. the weight of ther rider. As the Recon is for men they are much 'harder' than the womans models.

They told me to forget about the Luv models and get something more serious .... ----> OK its maybe just 'shoptalk'?!

I thought about ordering one from the USA .... but shipping costs and costoms duties/VAT will be too expensive .....

I made the right choice .... lets see after my first day out in snow with them.

Hi,
I demoed the Recon a few years ago and really liked it, I actually prefered it to the Lotta Luv, not really sure why though?? I didn't find it a hard ski to ski at all, I had only been skiing for 1 or 2 years at the time but I think it is the type of ski that can grow with you as well, sure you'll love it anyway

I'm very interested to see a ski review once you get a chance to get on your Recons. I've heard a lot about them.

I have the Burnin Luvs and love them (I won them! :D) but I'd be very interested to hear ladies' reviews of the men's versions.

BTW-graphics on your ski are VERY cool.

I love my Recons, but, you will find that they have a mind of their own,
they talk to me,
Recon's ---"look--over there----CRUD SNOW!!!!"
Me -"I don't know, it looks steep, difficult, maybe tomorrow."
Recons--"Please please please"
Me---- Oh I guess, if we have to, wait, ok, Wheeeeeeeee!!!!! Lets do it again.
Forgiving and fine at speed, a little slow-to-turn for me as a front side carver and in the moguls (possible it is technique as well),- but every where else, these skis will take care of you.
Enjoy!
PS this is not the mens version of the Burning Luv- closer to the Lotta.

thanks for the info Lucine! I'll see how I ride with them. Maybe I ski diffently than many of you as I learned to ski in the 60/70ties when carving was not known .... :D:D

Even if the weather forecast wasn't very good I went again to my favorite resort: LAAX

Weather was cloudy during the morning till midday and then sunny.

OK ladies! How performed my new K2 Apache Recon ski???

FANTASTIC!!!! WOOOOUUUUUW!!!!!!

First I did some runs on my favorite slope .... freshly groomed by these fantastic Pistenbully machines!
I couldn't believe the speed turns I could do without any negative reaction of the ski! No scary vibrations like the first luv has! The slope is a mix of natural and artificial snow. Flat parts/steep parts just go for it! On icy patches there is a good grip from the edge. I had to slow down more than once as the ski wanted to go much faster than I can ride actually!
This put a lot of overload/pressure/strain on my old knees .... my collateral ligaments and ACL hurts a lot and I couldn't barely walk at the end of the day. Pains started right from the first run.
There is a difference in the turns ... the first luv have 13m and the recons 15m radius. I noted this when I did very short turns.
I noted that because of the higher speeds the ski it tends to jump over little bumps ... I got used to it ...
After these speed runs I changed to another run which I do not like as it has too many icy patches .... no problem! Just do your turn and put some weight on the edge. At the end of the run you have to go straight down the mountain as the chairlift is some 100yrds in the flat. I started my speed run much higher than with the first luvs ... oh my god!!!!! never thought I can get that fast with such short skis and without any wobble, scary vibrations or skis that will not hold the direction! After 3 runs I decided its time for some serious skiing. I went to the chairlifts where the really difficult slopes are (black 1-3diamonds). Snow was very difficult to ride. Fresh powder not well groomed and very soft.
Not what I like ... it puts a lot of strain on my knees! Ok down I went the double black slopes. No problem even in the steepest part you can do turns well ... I did not ride that fast because of the state of the slope .... I did speed turns on a very soft (fresh powder not settled by grooming) and the ski holds the turn I want with a precision like a swiss watch.
You can also do any turn you learned in ski school ... the ski will do it. I am sorry I couldn't try it out in the fresh powder. The resort had put up avalanche warning signs (I actually saw a small avalanche going down, 2 freeriding skier triggered it, very scary) and I never tried skiing in fresh powder. Not even 20years ago! It was very tempting as Laax has nice 'freeride areas'. I did not try to do any jumps. No experiments at the end of the day with 'tired bones'.
The end of the day run is the one down to the resort. Very icy with a little artifical snow. Even on a icy slope going straight downhill the ski never shoed any negative reaction. Again .... no problem!

positive:
- turns well at all speeds.
- icy conditions are not a problem, edges hold very well
- keeps the direction at high speed
- no unwanted wobble/vibrations like the First Luvs
- Marker 11.0 bindings open much better than the Marker 10.0

negative:
- turns initiate not as easy as the First Luv (15m vs. 13m)
- more muscle power needed to ride
- less forgiving if you make a mistake (likes to catch an edge)
- a little bit on the stiff side (maybe I should have bought another ski in between?)

conclusion:
A ski that rides fantastic. Maybe not for beginners?

I am very happy with it. Specially the speed you can ride and the security on icy patches. :becky::becky::becky:

Having had several pairs of these, I agree with the bit about needing a bit more muscle, about the lack of chatter in rough conditions, pretty good at speed. But, it is no race ski and the edge grip depends very much on the type of ice. East Coast boilerplate will demand you keep the edges sharp. On the other hand, it doesn't chatter, which helps the edge hold on.

I'm not sure about the "catching an edge" part. I've had that problem when going from a narrower ski to a wider ski, maybe that's part of the issue?

Catching an ebge .... if you turn on an icy patch and put full weight on the edge and than the ski catches a soft patch of snow it may trow you downhill in no time .... sorry my english isn't that good.

Have you had these tuned before riding? Edge catching is not what they are known for.
I agree that are a little slower to initiate turns. but these are a really forgiving ski -they will see you right in all types of conditions, though it is not a front side ice carver.
It is not a beginner ski but ........
It is good you are having fun on them, it takes a few days to really feel confident on any ski,- Test them hard, they will not disappoint.
My DH has stolen my Recons, they are a little short for him but they are rapidly becoming a team!
hmmmm
Enjoy
