Nela 96 Length 156 vs 164

There are some really good end of season deal and I'm unsure about which length I should go for. I am an early advanced skiier, 162cm (5'4") and 115-120 lbs. I have been on BP 88 158cm for the past seasons and just bought Stockli Montero AW 158cm this season and loved it. The offical stockli recommendation for Nela 96 is body size plus 5cm (https://www.stoeckli.ch/usen/recomm...hlptxeL5vGldvEV7ubQdgPSScVoqfOVrqguOUFeuMSYgF), which points me to 164cm. I'm hesitating because I know I'm light and would want to play on bumps and in tress with these skis and wonder if I should size down for these reasons. I expect I would spend 30% time on piste, 30% on bumps, 30% open bowl and 10% in trees with these skis. I don't need to maximize carving performance for these skis as I have the AW for that, but also don't want the skis to be too short to be unstable. I wonder what are people's experience with these lengths. Thanks!

Would help to know what region you intend to ski the Nela 96s in most of the time. What makes sense in the northeast is usually different from what makes sense in the Rockies.

I'm a few inches shorter and a bit lighter, probably a few decades older. As I went from an adventurous intermediate to a solid advance skier over the last 15-20 years, the skis I bought got longer for a while. However, after a while I decided that shorter skis have advantages for the type of terrain I've come to enjoy. At this stage my 85mm all-mountain Stöckli skis are the same length as my 106mm DPS powder skis. They are 158/159cm. When I bought the 2026 BP88 last fall, I considered the 158cm. However, I ended up going with 152cm. Had a great time with them at Taos in February. They will be my go to skis for future Taos trips since I spend a higher percentage of time skiing bumps and trees there.

I’m an inch taller than you but the same weight, and similar ability level. I ski in Montana, so also the Rockies, and spend a lot of time in bumps (some in trees, but I don’t love them so I’m more likely to take the adjacent groomer), though I did more groomer skiing this year thanks to conditions. I ski on Santa Anas, and demoed the 159 a few years ago, but bought them in 165 because the deal was too good to pass up.

The longer length changed my life (and my skiing!!) for the better. They’re stable without losing too much nimbleness, and I don’t find the length is my issue in the bumps (it’s alllll skier error there!)

I haven’t skied the Nelas (I want to!!) but would absolutely pick the 165 length for myself to demo or obtain, if someone were giving them to me.

FWIW, I have a friend, about the same height and ~10lbs heavier, who skies them as her daily driver in 165. She’s advanced (PSIA instructor) and loves them.

Thanks for giving me the final nudge I needed towards a decision. I’ve spent waaaayyyy too much time on this (I’m indecisive). I just placed an order for the 164cm skis and now begins the long wait for next season

And for anyone else who’s interested, SkiEsstentials is selling brand new Nela 96 2024 model for 400 dollars! As far as I know the 2024 and 2026 models have the same construction just different graphics, so I think it’s a bargain!

A place called SKATEWORLD has the 2026 for $265? Nela 96 in two sizes.
That website is very likely a scam. I did a bit of digging, and the domain (skategearworld.com) was registered in January by an entity in Finland, but he website claims they’re located in California. They also have a “Verified by Trustpilot and Google” banner on their page, but if you actually go to Trustpilot, the website isn’t on there! Google also only turns up one result (the one saying it was registered in January in Finland), and there doesn’t appear to be a Reddit thread about them.
