nau clothing

Mollmeister posted about this company (nau) a few months back, and I was intrigued. I was leaving for Europe in a couple of weeks, and the clothing struck me as something that would perform double duty: I could ski in it, and I could wear it sightseeing without looking like a slob.

Luckily, there was a nice 50% off sale going (still is, in fact); I ordered a bunch of pieces, and ended up with the Profile fleece jacket, the Acoustic pant, the Two-Faced LS zip, and the Urbane jacket (same one mollmeister posted, but different color).

I was very pleased with everything ... but I haven't skied in the jacket yet. The color I ordered is "carbon" -- and while it's a nice color, it turned out to be kind of a difficult color. It looked pretty bad with all the pants I own, and I couldn't find any pants to buy, it being late in the season.

The color is sort of the color that black fabric fades to if you leave it in the sun too long. Next to black, it looks brown; next to brown, it looks purplish -- it is just a little bit "off," as if you're trying to match but missing. It looks nice with khaki or white, but I couldn't find anything good. (And I think I posted about looking for pants in Europe, what with the exchange rate ... no way. I will wait for next season.)

So I can't give you a technical review on the jacket, but I did wear it quite a bit. (A photo from Salzburg follows, in which I'm also wearing the Acoustic pants, even though you can't really see them.) Size wise ... the jacket is a medium, and it's pretty roomy. The small fit pretty well, too, but I wanted the extra room for layering, and the sleeves are nice and long. The pants were pretty true to size ... except for the Asylum ski pant, which I ordered in a medium, and they were ENORMOUS, so I had to return them. I'm not even sure a small would have fit. But they were way cool pants.

I ended up with a size medium base layer, size small fleece, size 8 pant, and size medium jacket. I ordered two sizes of everything and returned what didn't fit. (Shipping is free this month, I noticed.)

Anyway, the jacket definitely attracted some attention in Austria. I got to spread the word about nau (hope they appreciate it, and maybe they'll finance my next trip??).

That jacket looks great on you!

Thanks for posting the sale tip. I looked through their stuff when moll posted the link, and done a fair amount of drooling, now maybe it's time to do some spending.

About the Asylum pants, I'd decided against them since I wanted and extra large and only saw them in small through large. Do you think the cut runs about a full size large?

Yeah, I do. I normally size between a small and a medium, where a medium is just a tad too big and a small a tad too small. But these were huge.

I heard these guys are done. What a bummer, but I guess they are having a great web-sale right now!

That's a tough one, but hard to avoid, isn't it. My Arc'teryx pieces are made in Canada, but they also cost twice as much as everything else ...

Even Arcteryx started manufacturing alot of their garments in China and elsewhere last year. I have heard that only the harnesses and packs are still made in Canada.
