Yes. I'm a little upset that the GP just called it allergies last summer. But we're on to it now.

When I read your posts and thought "allergies?"......Glad you're getting it taken care of and in the hands of a cardiologist !

For me it was the swollen ankle with no turning it or damaging it. Anyone I've known with heart issued had ankle issues.

Yes, it seems like you had ankle edema: fluid backing up into your ankles. When the mitral valve is not functioning properly the heart can't push out enough blood, and it backs up and causes fluid to leak out of your blood vessels. It's like heart disease 101. I'm sorry you were not diagnosed sooner, but TG you're on the right track now.

Nothing to add, but as someone with mitral valve prolapse, I wish you all the best with your valve replacement and bypass surgery. I always feel a bit like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop as far as needing valve replacement so I'm sorry to hear you have to go through this.

My friend went in for an echocardiogram on the advice of the doctors in his long-haul Covid study program. The doctor who read the echo called him shortly afterward, advising him to see his cardiologist asap, saying he had a severely leaky mitral valve (prolapse), that repair was likely not possible, which according to her meant that his only option was open heart surgery to replace the valve. We spent a stressful weekend thinking on this. This week he saw his cardiologist, who looked at the echo results and said no open heart surgery...advised seeing a specialist about a new thing called the mitral clip. It is a repair vs a replacement, and is a much less invasive procedure, faster and less time in hospital. His consult with the mitral clip specialist is in 3 weeks.

@Jilly , I will be thinking of you. I think your otherwise good health will work in your favor, and that you can get back to activities that you love sooner than later.

Mitral clip sounds like what my MIL had several years ago.

Consult was today. All is good. Need to meet with anesthesiologist next and then get it done. 6 weeks of nothing...can't even drive.
You've got this @Jilly, my dear friend who's now 83 and a mad keen skier had a similar operation at the begining of our season and made it back to the slopes before the season finished, she's also off skiing in Japan this coming February in saying that the 6 weeks no driving would be a pain, I dont think she was off the road for quite that long.

Stay positive, Jilly! You'll get fixed up and then on your way to good things. Maybe if this northern hemisphere season is out you can plan something south in "our" summer. Something to look forward to.

Wow! I just saw this now. Sorry, @Jilly that you had to suffer for awhile before they figured out the cause of your malaise. At least now you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hugs.

All the best Jilly. I'm sure you'll be fine, cardiac surgery sounds like it has advanced hugely recently. You'll be in good hands. Plus, you'll be one of their fitter/more motivated patients!
