My helmet strap hurts

Okay, it's brand new, it fits great. And I believe I have had similar issues with other helmet straps. They abrade the living daylights out of my chin!! Solutions? Obviously, loosen it. I usually wear some kind of balaclava and/or neck gaiter, but we're getting out of that season now, and I can get by without those. Anyone have any quick advice, esp beyond loosening the strap to insecurity? Something I can put over the strap material? Thoughts, ideas?

My Giro helmet has a thin pad of fleece sewn to the side of the strap that goes against my chin. Maybe you can find a piece of soft fleece at a local craft or fabric store and fabricate a "tube" that goes around the chin strap (or even just the part of it that irritates your skin). You could tack it in place using tiny stitches at the edge of the chin strap.

Yeah, both my Giro and Boeri have this same strip of fleece. Works well for me. SueNJ's idea to fabricate one of your own seems like a good solution.

What sort of helmet do you have?

If you're not into sewing your own, I believe a company makes them and they should be available at your ski shop. (I can't remember if they're offered by one of the helmet companies or Turtle Fur). Maybe check by the kids' helmets?

Volklgirl is right. Turtle Fur makes them.

It's a Giro Fuse, just got it. Has a "velvet"-like material on the strap. Felt soft enough when I took off my neck gaiter last weekend. :nono: Abraded the whole bottom of my chin, which is now charmingly but lightly scabby. Real attractive (like sunburn peeling). Will begin search for something as suggested above, i.e., Turtle Fur (have a neck gaiter with this brand name). Not into sewing

:( I wonder if you have an errant edge or thread that shouldn't be there, that's abrading your chin. I skied without my neck gaiter this past weekend with my Fuse helmet, and I had no discomfort at all. I wish you were closer--I'd offer to rig something up for you.

Nah, checked it, all good. It's me. I have skin from Freak Out-ville. Ha. You should see what happens to it when exposed to sun  SPF 100+ or bust for me! Kind thanks, though. Am sure I'll be able to rig up something. Looking right now like I got a sunburn on my lower chin and am peeling! Strange...
