My first slick rock adventure!

Mr. Sheena and I planned a last minute trip to Moab this past weekend.

I was not sure what the huge draw about slick rock was, so we had to find out. Wow -- is that stuff fun! We stuck to the easy trails, but it was enough to give me an idea of what it is all about.

On Saturday, we got up early and biked the Klondike Bluffs trail. For me, it was a good trail to practice the slick rock riding. There were some boring double track trails in between, but it was still good fun, and there was nothing particularly technical on the trail.

After that, we had lunch at the Moab Brewery, where the host at first mistook me for being my husband's child. Then we took a quick drive through Arches National Park and checked out Delicate Arch. We decided that we needed to get another ride in and wanted something quick and fun, so we did the Bar M loop - this was a really easy 7 mile ride, but it did have some fun sections.

Sunday, we tried Sovereign Singletrack. I had read in another forumn that Sovereign was a good trail for novice bike riders, but this trail kicked my butt in many sections. I rolled backwards down a ramp of slick rock and have a nice black and blue calf as a souvenir. I was a little more confident on the slick rock on Sunday, and actually dropped a couple of small drops - mostly 6 - 12" - still a challenge for me, but I was excited to be able to try it. It is definitely inspired me to improve my bike handling and fitness so I can get out there and try it again!

Pictures to come later.

Awesome! Glad you had fun.

I think people tend to say Sovreign is good for "novices" just because it's... less likely to put you in the hospital than some of the other Moab trails. Still not easy!

Nice!!

I hope this is the start of a long-lasting friendship with Moab. :D You'll just keep loving it more and more down there as you progress. It's totally different than riding up here, and the scenery is fantastic! Maybe I'll see you down there this fall.

I am riding my entry-level mountain bike, a GT Avalanche 2.0 hardtail. I think I did something to my bike during the weekend - the chain is pretty slack, and keeps slipping and rubbing against the derailer.
