Mt. Snow making Carinthia one big park

Any Mt. Snow fans see this?

Pretty interesting.... what's weird is that they have Claim Jumper, my favorite tree run ever, marked as a large park. I wonder if they plan to build features in there, or if they're just considering the natural jumps and rocks and such a park?

There's a decent thread over on AlpineZone that has a nice response from a Mt. Snow rep on page 4:

Not sure how I feel about this in general. I'm in favor, I guess. It will be nice to have all the park stuff separated out, but Carinthia was always a nice place to go to avoid crowds on the main face. Crowding was less of a problem in general last year, though, so who knows. And I certainly would like more small/medium parks to learn in, so...

I guess the bottom line for me is that Peaks has done an awesome job at Mt. Snow so far, so if they think this is a good idea, I think it will probably work out pretty well.

I agree -- it's a great idea. Great for park skiers/boarders, and great for families with park skiers/boarders who want to be together at the same mountain. This should be a good business move for them.

From their website: "A tree-skiing area, a superpipe with 18-foot walls, a mini-pipe with 8-foot walls, an all-natural park absent of manmade material and a big-air site will also be featured."

...so sounds like the tree-skiing remains with nature's jumps and obstacles.

Sounds kind of cool. You can ski the trees and then watch freestylers do their stuff.

This looks like the trend (Mountain Creek anyone?). I personally dislike it. Because what they're doing is take away one of the least crowded area of the mountain away from me!

Not being a park rat, I don't have the proper prospective from their side. Maybe they really need it. The selfish side of me thinks "what wrong with a few runs? Why do they need to turn a nice quiet section of the mountain into one big park?"

Oh, great. That tree skiing area is *so much fun*; I would've hated to see them mess with it. The mini-pipe will be great for me this year, too.

I think one of the big differences between what Mountain Creek did and what Mt Snow is doing is that Mountain Creek eliminated a lot of the better runs and some racing runs for the parks, as well as putting the park area above the best lodge. So they took a lot away from skiers, which Mt. Snow isn't really doing. Carinthia does tend to be less crowded, but I never had a problem with crowds anywhere at Mt. Snow last season -- just pre-Peaks ownership.

I remain optimistic about this, but it's really well-suited to me right now -- I've been spending more and more time in the parks on the east coast the past few seasons. So if any of you need me at any point in the 08-09 season, I'll be doing mini-pipe/Claim Jumper/Lower Nitro laps on Carinthia. Watch out, railslides -- it's only a matter of time now. ;)
