Mr TC needs a bike

We always see "what bike for my lady" threads. :frusty:

Let's have some fun and pick a new bike for my "old man". The only thing he knows for sure is he wants a full sus and a high bottom bracket.

Thinking about:

Specialized Enduro SL - https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=33445

Giant Trance X2 - https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bikes/mountain/1288/29375/

Trek Fuel EX - https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2008/mountain_full_suspension/fuel_ex/fuelex8/

or maybe Trek Remedy - https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2008/mountain_full_suspension/remedy/remedy8/

Some of these may be overkill, but have you met Terry? :duck:

So what bike should he get?

my advice is always to pick the one that feels and fits the best. The coolest frame and component set in the world isn't enough if it doesn't fit right.

I bought a bike for Mr. GG last fall. The way I did it was to call favorite LBS, and told them my price range, what kind of bike I was looking for him, and what size frame and they had a selection ready for him to try when we got there. He test rode several specialized ( epic, enduro) a santa cruz, and a Kona. He spent a few hours doing this, and settled on the Kona Dawg Supreme. I had the ultimate satisfaction with getting him the kind of bike I wanted to get him ( and he needed but that is a different post) and the satisfaction of knowing he was 100% pleased with it too.

That's all well and good, but in the spirit of "what ski for my lady" threads, Shouldn't we just pick one for him and let him live with it? :ROTF:

oh sorry. I guessed I skipped over that part of your post.
I'm partial to Specialized, and I think Giant is a great line, so I can narrow it down to two options.

I will tell ya, buying HIM a bike was so cool. He's been on a really nice but very old school racing hardtail, and was insistent that his bike was "just fine". The change in attitude since upgrading to a 5/5 trail bike, fs is both amusing and terrifying.

Funniest thing about MrTC(oof, Mr SH, I forget myself sometimes) is that he's got to have the best of the best, but is willing to buy used.
I'm partial to Trek, but not exclusive to it.
I won't buy Giant for myself, but would happily do so for him.
Reason, I'm Trekchick on epic and would hate to be GiantChick :ROTF:

As I stated, the two things he is clear about are bottom bracket height and FS.
Oh, and he knows he doesn't want a Walmart Bike!

Anyway... how about a Transition Covert?

That's at the top of my list if I add a fourth bike to the quiver...

No bottom bracket will be high enough for him until he learns he can't both lean into and pedal through a turn at the same time. :laughter:

Once he figures this out, I don't think BB height will be an issue. How about the Santa Cruz Superlight or Blur?

Do we need to go to GR to go bike shopping? Do we really need an excuse to go bike shopping???? :eyebrows:

As he explained his BB height to me, I started to understand. On a motorcycle, the tendency is to put inside foot out to guide the turn. So he will take some serious practice to get the hang of it.
We went for a short ride again, on our own property and he measured the BB height on the Liquid which is considerably higher than mine and the cannondale.
Not a fix for his problem, but if that's all he's demanding in a bike then that is what we'll look for.

Silly man!

In the spirit of the "which ski for my g.f/wife", the spec of whatever bike you get him doesn't matter, as long as it's black/gray/silver color (and not purple, never mind pink)!

How about the Santa Cruz Superlight or Blur?

I'm currently drooling over the Santa Cruz Heckler and the Specialized Pitch. Heckler is a good climber like the Superlight, but better on the downhill.

The Pitch felt pretty cool, but noticed a little more weight over the handlebars.

Checkout the Bike Builder on the Santa Cruz site... fun, fun, fun!

Heckler has a long run and lots of loyal followers. And it's reasonably priced, unlike the Blur. ;-)

However, everyone who'd own a Heckler and the Blur said the Blue is miles better. Depends on your frame choice and build choice, the Blur can be build for x-c racing or lift-served downhill blasting. The Heckler, on the other hand, is a big mountain freeride bike. I suspect a bit of an overkill for Michigan.

Yes, I have a Superlight and LOVE it for general riding around (x-c). Still drooling over a Blur for lift-served downhill though.

Ahhh MTB shopping! Almost as fun as ski gear shopping! ha ha.

Anyway, from your list I would pick the Trek Fuel EX, but I've been a fan of the Fuel line for years.

Check these bikes out too:

Devinci Hectik Prolly my favourite bike of all.
Kona Stinky Deluxe This ones more of a big air bike.
Kona Hei Hei Supreme Love the name of that one!

I've been hearing rave reviews about the Trek Remedy and Trek Fuel with their new suspension design. I'm partial to Trek (I've been riding a Liquid for a while now), and the Remedy is way up on my list for my next trail bike.

So, any news on Mr. TC/SH's new bike? Has he demo'd any yet?

I am living vicariously through you/him, as I am still saving for my new toy.

PS. I forgot to mention that Specialized Pitch has a high BB.
