Mount Snow 3/11/06

So this hardly qualifies for a trip report since it was just a morning trip to the area to take a few turns but figured I'd post it anyhow.

Husband and I were looking for a morning of skiing that was drivable from the amherst/northampton ma area. We'd originally figured we'd hit k-mart since we have the A41 pass and probably would never go there. Indeed it is a good deal further than Snow, but all the complaints I've heard about it being mt Slow, etc I figured we'd be miserable in the long lift lines. Well after having a look at the snow report/trail map an trail closures at K-mart we decided maybe it wasnt worth the extra hour driving, etc.

We checked the trailmap and figured we'd hit Carinthia at Snow since there's a lot of blue terrain there and since we have the A41 pass nothing to lose. Well we were pleasantly surprised that the lines were not nearly as bad as we'd been prepared for. Indeed the quad at Carinthia had a sizeable line, however I do not believe it was nearly as bad as the lines we saw on a Friday at Loon. The other thing of note is that unlike some mountains that have multiple queued lines for each lift, Snow seems to have a single line at each so while the line *looks* long its not nearly so bad as it appears. However the nearby double had nearly no line at all and provided access to some nice terrain. Also found the staff there to be really nice - much like the experience we had at Sugarloaf last March.

At this point we've now skiied all of the (former) ASC eastern mountains sans Killington/Pico and I'd say my favorite is definitely Sugarloaf, but Snow was good too.

We didn't ski any of the black terrain so I can't comment on how satisfying you would find it were this your thing, but the blue and green trails were nice. Also in addition to the lift lines not being that long I couldn't spot any trails that were nasty crowded (unlike at Attitash our "home" mountain on a Saturday).

So overall I'll give them a thumbsup. Had a good time and if the new ownership comes up with a reasonably priced attitash/snow combo pass for next season I could see myself skiing here a lot more.

As to the skiing, the groomed and less groomed trails were well marked and in good condition. The conditions were a bit springlike (it was 40 degrees there yesterday) but still nice skiing. As for me I had a great time. I was carving a lot, transitioning edge-to-edge very well and even using my poles well. I was flying - even passing my husband (who skis on 170+ skis and is a much more experienced skier, etc)! Yes I was VERY happy on my skis yesterday. I was on my TrueLuvs as I was a bit tired and wanted the safety net of the additional forgiveness if I ended up in the backseat - which I didn't!

(so that's my first trip report, hopefully I didnt miss anything!)
