MOTHER OF GOD IT'S HOT!

With age and changing medical status I find the heat and humidity beats me up much worse than it ever did when I was younger. So I am grateful to have central air conditioning. I can’t sleep now when it’s 88° during the middle of the night and no breeze. That’s just too much for me. The days with the heat index over 100° have kept me off my boat, even!

We are in the process of moving and I am doing the house hunting. We made AC a part of the requirements. I don't care if it isn't Florida Hot the entire summer, I want my AC when it is. I'm surprised how many places don't have central air in the NE.

My house is only 15 years old, and we don’t have AC, either. You generally need it for like 3 days here in VT. We DO have ceiling fans, though.

I was just over at what will soon by my former house to sweep out the garage. It was only 10 min max and I was drenched. Can't wait for the storm tonight be clear out this humidity.

I agree with you, Elemmac. I live in upstate NY and run my AC at most 15 days a year. When we bought the house, the Realtor said that we wouldn't need air conditioning and that's why no builder installs it. She was wrong. We insisted that the builder install a whole house fan for uncomfortable days and AC for unbearable ones. My brother lives in Louisiana. He runs his AC full time from February to November. I wouldn't like that at all.

I prefer to sleep with my windows open, listening to the peepers on the pond, waking to the birds chirping, and enjoying the cool morning air. Jumping back under the still-warm covers for a few more stolen minutes of sleep is heavenly.

My dad was a rocket scientist - no really - he designed and built temperature control and dehumidification systems for the US space program from the monkey flights to Apollo. From 1958, I always had an air conditioned house because he had the equipment and the knowhow. I lived in one house (built 1896) without air conditioning in Cincinnati while we were rehabbing it. I couldn't stand the heat so I broke down and bought window units.

Air conditioning. Love it or hate it.

I completely agree. If I were building a new house, I think I would splurge for it too, even if I only used it a few times a summer.

As a self-declared nerd (and my husband would completely agree), that's pretty awesome.

We just got it, and I'm glad because of the stretch that we're in but I'd much rather have the windows open. Once we get through this we'll be more judicious with its use, but right now it's been running a LOT.

We finished moving on Saturday - mostly the heavy furniture left - and it was brutal. Thank heaven for a special diva (a moving specialist herself) who helped.

Yesterday started out cooler, so I mowed the lawn! I had to hydrate aggressively afterward and then I fell asleep! My eyes were doing something funny, too. This heat is no joke. Vision was fine after the nap, btw. I got almost nothing done the rest of the day.

Thank heaven for cooler weather coming in. I can feel the breeze stirring up!

I just bought a condo with an electric heating system that needs to be upgraded. I flirted with the idea of a pellet stove, but after consulting with an environmental program here that specializes in helping people maximize utility efficiency, I plan to install a heat pump/compressor-cycle unit. The incidental benefit is that I will automatically end up with a/c. I'm not sorry. :-)

Same situation here. My sister and mom are realtors and they tell me all of these people that are flooding into Seattle-- so many are from places where they can't fathom not having AC, and so they can't fathom not having it here despite their realtors telling them that they don't need it, and everyone is getting it installed, and all the builders are putting it in new homes.

It’s definitely cooled off here. Still humid, but mercifully more comfortable.

Still feels like being wrapped in a warm, wet blanket here! Waiting for that cold front they promised us!

I knew I'd say this (and I hate to) after the heat wave broke, but today I'm cold! I'm not saying the drop of about 15 degrees C in 24 hours isn't welcome, but this must be hard on our bodies! Low tonight here is 9 C - gosh, I've skied in those temps! Anyway, that heat wave was BRUTAL.

With a few days of slightly cooler weather, I might actually get the patio that I am building finished up finally. It is definitely taking me longer than I anticipated. I think the ratio of time spent placing the flagstone to sitting in the shade with my water bottle was about 1:2 the past few days. At least the next hardscape project is in a shady part of the yard.

Air conditioning off! We might have to have an adult beverage around the fire pit later this evening. Predicted to be 49*F here in NY.

Heat has broken for a few days here and humidity was down significantly. It was gloriously sunny, high close to 80 and only 20% humidity!

I saw a comment somewhere online today that humidity is a fancy way of saying that even the air is sweating. Made me LOL.

Now it's my turn. It's 93 right now on the beach in Santa Cruz.... now that's cooking for here. It's been in the low 60's with fog all week.....

It’s a beautiful evening on the Tvan deck tonight. Bit of a breeze, shimmery sun on the water peeking through the trees, glass of wine. Beautiful! Finally!
