I'm trying to think of a coherent response to this and I don't even know where to start.

1) I've got $5 that says she can't find the US on a map.
2) Did someone coach her on how to answer these? "Try to work in current events! Judges love it!" Iraq? South Africa? What???
3) The guy with the mic deserves a raise for keeping a straight face.
4) This is kind of terrifying.
And have you guys seen Billy Madison?

Geez, & my kid gets called stupid at school because he said sugarfree candy & sodas have chemicals in them. The other fourth graders disagreed. They must be candidates in the making for Ms. SC

I feel so sorry for this GIRL. She is going to have to live with the "so-stupid-we-can't-even-label-her-simply-stupid" label for the rest of her life. OK, she's not very fast on the uptake, but now everyone in the Whole Wide World knows it, and is making fun of her. Why do people feel so happy putting down others when they are in difficult situations? I've done and said really stupid things in front of people which make me want to melt into a puddle on the floor and seep down between the floorboards and disappear and never be heard from again. Hasn't everyone? (Oh Oh Oh no!!! ... what if the right answer is "No"????!!!)
The problem is not with her misunderstanding of the question and associated nervousness and muddle-headedness, but with the pretension of the beauty pageant organizers that in such a contest substantive questions matter. We all know those questions don't really count for much. The contest facilitators need to fess up and structure the competition so that it only focuses on looks.
Or change its true nature, and focus on something else, like most-likely-to-make-a-positive-difference-in-the-world, or whatever. But as long as it's just a beauty pageant, then contestants will not usually be prepared to offer valuable answers to significant socio-political questions. They can just say "world peace" and the like, as she was trying desperately to do.
Let's let the situation rest, and leave the poor girl alone.

Good points you've made there. I feel a tad bit admonished. Yes, I myself have opened my mouth & said many stupid things. If that had been me I'm sure I'd have said another one of my stupid things again. Something like, I had no idea 20 percent of the country didn't know where on the map the U.S. is. Obviously those who've immigrated know, cause they managed to find their way here.. And isn't roughly 20 % of the population still in grade school ?
Yep,that would have been me failing the beauty contest with my mouth. You are right, it's just not fair to have a really meaningless mistake critisized by millions of people who have never & will never meet you & what you said doesn't mean anything to them anyhow. It is dumb to bring questions like that to a beauty contest.Well - for what it's worth, a little before SkiDiva posted the video, Miss teen SC appeared on one of the morning talk shows and "redeemed" herself. That is, the interviewer asked her about the response, and the beauty contestant said something like, "I was nervous and made a mistake. If I could take back my response and give a new one, it would be this one [that my publicist crafted for me]: Well, if those statistics are correct, then that's unfortunate, but among my friends and I, we can all find the US on a map."
I know this is going to sound heartless, but I really don't have too much sympathy for this girl. I mean, as they used to say in the old Super Chicken cartoons (anyone remember those??), "You knew the job was dangerous when you took it." These type of questions, warranted or not, are part of the package when you sign up for a beauty contest. The fact that she got this far means she had to answer similar type questions -- and perform in similar situations -- in the past.
All the same, if it were me, I wouldn't want my life and personality defined by such a bad moment, so I hope she can get beyond it somehow. Hey, who knows -- these days it seems the worse your behaviour/intelligence/run-ins with the law, the farther you end up going! She'll probably end up with all kinds of lucrative commercial deals.

Oh, this is going to make me sound mean, but c'mon this girl has to know how hilarious this is.
I've been laughed at, and laughed with, and for the most part, I ended up laughing too!!
I live in the real world and guess what, This girl has plenty of company!
I'm guessing she was nervous, and has probably risen above it, and will go on to be a productive part of society!

Sorry, I don't see what's so shocking about the clip. I vaguely recall one vice presidential candidate (or was it a vice president) said something equally stupid in a public speech!
Somehow, I don't believe that was any indication the girl is stupid. She may not be the kind who keep their cool under pressure. But that and smart doesn't have much correlation. In fact, I felt the media (internet included), put too much emphasis on quick shallow responds, aka sound bites. And not enough emphasis on valuable thoughts requiring research & comtemplation.
I'm not saying the girls is smart or not. Just that people are having an entertainment on her misshape. Nothing wrong with have a good laugh on her misfortune. But nobody have any right to feel so superior.

WHY? Why do young women feel the need to be validated by how they look? Why bother with beauty contests at all, its just something shallow that is dressed up with supposedly intellectual questions.
Poor girl, sorry to be harsh, but the fact that Emily Pankhurst threw herself under the Kings horse was obviously wasted on her!
