Sugar and Cataloochee in NC opened first, per usual. Sugar stayed open even as the initial base melted away.

By Thanksgiving, there will be a number of places to slide on snow in the southeast. Snowshoe opens on Nov. 26.

Mother Nature is finally helping out with good snowmaking weather! Snow guns have been firing for a couple days in WV, MD, VA, and NC. The list of resorts in the region running lifts by Dec. 6 is going to be much longer than the three open in NC this weekend.

Ober in TN even opened a few slopes after getting a head start from snowmaking boxes such as the Latitude 90. Ober added two and has 14 for 2025-26. That assured that snow tubing was open for Thanksgiving week.

Masasanutten clearly wants to open with more than the old "core" trails. That used to mean Southern Comfort (green), Lower Showtime (blue from mid-station), and Diamond Jim (black from the top). Snowmaking has already started in earnest on Ridgecrest and Upper Paradice, as well as Upper Showtime. That's a blue route from the top. Pretty sure I saw lights on Mueller's Mile last night, which means snowmaking there on the blue route from the top. Mueller's is the easiest blue to lap while riding the Peak Express detachable quad.

From the forecast on the Massanutten Weatherstem, should be snowmaking possibilities for the next 10 days on the upper mountain at least. Meaning overnight with some mornings and late evenings as well. It's in the teens even at the base this morning, Nov. 29. :snow::brr:

Have seen pictures on DCSki of snowmaking at the western PA resorts on Epic. Laurel has some decent size snow whales already.

For people interested in what's new at southeast ski hills, here's an overview. Along with on-going improvements for snowmaking, there is a new lift at Cataloochee, new snowcats/groomers, and a few new buildings. Hatley Pointe near Asheville has been completely transformed since it was bought a couple years ago. HP, Cat, Ober, Winterplace, Wintergreen, Massanutten, Bryce, and Canaan Valley are on Indy.

Yep. Mueller's is white all along the ridge. Yesterday's winds sent a lot of flakes into the trees, but they continue to blow snow at full force. My car is covered with Snowmax. It looks like I drove through a blizzard and I only went up for lunch!

Timberline is opening next Thursday. Discounted lift tickets Dec. 4-11.

From email sent out on November 29, 2025:

Opening Day is Thursday, December 4th!

We’ve made a significant amount of snow on our most popular terrain, and winter is just getting started! Snowmaking efforts will continue between now and Opening Day. We’ll be able to get a more accurate assessment of which terrain will be available on Opening Day as snowmaking and grooming continue. Mountain Ops will gradually open additional terrain following Opening Day.

To celebrate this early-season opening, we’re kicking off the 25/26 season with Bonus Days!

Bonus Days will be in effect from Thursday, December 4th, to Thursday, December 11th.

Bonus Days daily lift tickets will be reduced to $69, and rentals $29 per day. Bonus day lift tickets and rentals can be purchased both in person and online.

Perfect & Gold Season Passholders can bring a friend for free! Perfect & Gold Season Pass holders are permitted one guest per day, and both passholder and guest must be present at the ticket window to receive their free daily lift ticket.

Silver and Bronze Pass holders can use their pass on any day of the week during Bonus Days! Alex Perfect:

Going to be quite a few opening days this weekend in the southeast.

Massanutten announced today that lifts will spin on Dec. 6. There was drone footage on the Mnut FB Page that showed more trails with snow coverage than I expected. Not only the blue routes from the summit, but also Lower MakAttack. Some easy park features too. That's a first in my memory of the last 20 years. Cheap lift tickers for those who aren't pass holders.

I will be there!

Just checked web cams for Liberty, which is blowing snow, and Whitetail, which is not.

The forecasts for the next week here in the mid-Atlantic have night time temps heading way down. Good weather for blowing snow is arriving.

Only Bryce and Canaan Valley won't be open this weekend. Here are the opening dates for the other hills in the southeast. For the places that opened by Thanksgiving weekend, mid-week closures were needed to keep snow during a few warm days. That's not uncommon during early season.

SOUTHEAST (TN, NC, WV, VA)
Sugar, NC - 12Nov, Thanksgiving weekend night skiing
*** Cataloochee, NC - 13Nov, Thanksgiving weekend night skiing
*** Ober, TN - 26Nov
Appalachian, NC - 29Nov
Timberline, WV - 04Dec
* Snowshoe, WV - 05Dec
*** Hatley Pointe, NC - 05Dec
Beech, NC - 05Dec
*** Wintergreen, VA - 05Dec
*** Massanutten, VA - 06Dec
** Wisp, MD - 06Dec
*** Winterplace, WV - 06Dec park only, 13Dec

Not only is Ober using Latitude 90 boxes for snowmaking, Massanutten and Beech have one for their tubing hills.

Certainly looks like winter at Massanutten for opening day today! :becky:

Although snowmaking has been happening on Ridgecrest and Upper Paradice, that won't be open until later. The core trails have become Southern Comfort, Upper and Lower Showtime, Mueller's Mile, and Diamond Jim, along with Paul's Way (teaching area at the base).

The legend for Daily Conditions has been enhanced for snowmaking. New icons for nighttime and daytime snowmaking, not just the snowflake anymore.

Opening weekend at Massanutten was pretty nice for early season. There was limited terrain, as you'd expect, but the snowmakers and groomers did a very good job of prepping for fun. There will be cold temps all week, so by next weekend the transit slopes b/w lifts 5 and 6 should be open, making it easier to flip back and forth. So nice to be back on skis !!!!!!

Skied my first day today at Beech. Nice to get that first run out of the way. And yes I remembered how to ski, phew! The snow was good but only one run is open from the top — Shawneehaw — so it was a bit crowded. Lots of boarders. They should have Robbins Run open by the end of the week. They got about 5” of natural yesterday. I’m going to give Hatley Pointe a try on Thursday. They are gracious enough to give season passes to us “Super Seniors” so I want to support them. I’ll probably spend some money on food or drink since the skiing is free! I’ll let you know how that goes.

Forecast for the entire southeast and mid-Atlantic region is All Systems Go in the next few weeks. Not only plenty of snowmaking opportunities, good chance of natural snow in the usual places.

"We hungry", say Massanutten Snowmakers. Our snowmaking crews continue to eat as cold weather blankets the valley, making for great turns as we begin daily operations today! The rope will drop on Upper Paradice, Upper MassTransit, YeeHa, Ridgecrest, and the Slot, with more terrain expected to come online as the weekend progresses.
