March is Officially Brain Injury Awareness Month...

Just wanted to let you all know that March is Officially being recognized as National Brain Injury Awareness Month.

Wednesday March 12th is National Brain Injury Awareness Day!

I'm finding interesting "wear your helmet" ads in People Magazine, Time, Us and a couple of others. Keep your eyes open for them. They are powerful! I will try to post a couple here later. Powerful!

Thank you, NVG, for posting this. I didn't know anything about this and will also be on the look-out for any/all ads.

These aren't the Ski/Board ads that the BIAA is running....but they are funny! I thought I'd share! Nice message....

I understand that its not law in many states to wear a helmet on a motorcycle. It is in Ontario and most of Canada. Also in Ontario you must wear a helmet if under 18 when riding a bicycle . I think its interesting that the ads are from Vespa - the scooter people. In Ontario you would have to wear a helmet to ride a Vespa. So these ad's would be redundant here. But not the message!!

Jilly, you are right, although I think there are many more states that require helmet use. I live in New Hampshire and we do not have a helmet law. Many times they have tried to pass one, but our state motto is "live free or die" so you can imagine how difficult it would be to get a that law on the books. On the other hand, I ride a motorcycle and NEVER ride without proper gear- helmet included.

Thanks for reminding us NVG. I got my brain injury in June 04'. Didn't get it skiing, and not much fun the last 3.5 years, but skiing again made my life worth living. Last season took my first run in about 4 years and what do you know..my body wasn't ready..Duhhh..Didn't train properly and ended up with this darn ACL/Meniscus deal. I did wear my new Bad Leiutenent Helmet though. I felt very cool. People didn't wear them much out in Cali before I got hurt, but wasn't taking any chances on my first run out. Anyway, that's my story and here's to having all your friends, kids, ect.. get those helmets out. It's definately not worth the risk. My cousin Sue Brown in Crested Butte was an extreme backcountry skiier and died of a major head injury about 6 years ago. Sue was seasoned skiier with all the equipment and knowledge needed to pursuit her love. Along with her freinds and husband, she was in completely in her element. With her poles in the air shouting a big YOO HOO she set off a shallow and wide avalanche. Ultimately she hit a tree and wasn't wearing a helmet. I don't think it would have helped much. She left us doing what she loved most. We really miss her. So to all of you, take good care out there.

Oh, that is so sad! Even after six years I can tell there's still a lot of pain there. You have my complete sympathy.

A helmet may not always help -- and as you said, it wouldn't have helped in your cousin's case. But it certainly can't hurt, either.

Welcome to the Divas, McGuinncat! :cheer:

Your head injury was 16 months after mine....right at the heighth of my most difficult times! But here I am!!! WOO HOO!!!! :yahoo:

I'm so sorry about your cousin. My philosophy about helmets comes from my own experience.....can't hurt....might help. In my case, I think it would have helped.

Heal up! Let's get you back out there on the hill! :ski2:
