Lunch on the slopes

Do you bring your lunch or buy? Is it hot dogs and fries or chili?

I (almost) always bring mine. The food at the mountain usually isn't very healthy or very good, and it's always expensive. So I generally bring a turkey wrap and some carrot sticks or a small orange. Then I'll buy either tea, water, or a diet coke.

What about you?

At Tremblant "boxed lunches" are not allowed in the main lodges. They want you to buy their food. So, we'll quite often bring a sandwich, but buy soup or chili (Hubby usually buys a beer). The food at the Grand Manitou isn't bad as for nutrition and choice. But the price. As season pass holders we get a discount, but still!! If you bring a complete lunch, which many of the racing families have to, to survive, you are put in the basement area near the washrooms!! Yeah!

I think we're spoilt for choice with mountain food over here. Various Americans I spoken to certainly consider it part of the "European experience". Certainly never bother taking sandwiches or anything

When we are on vacation I buy. This year we are staying in a ski-in/ski-out when we go to Steamboat at Christmas. We will eat in the condo at lunch and avoid the crowds (and eat healthier too!) When we buy I usually get soup or chicken chili and a diet coke. If I'm really hungry I'll get it in a bread bowl and eat that too!

At our local mountain we bring lunch and leave it in a locker. They have a special area set aside for "brown baggers."

Ours can be anything from a steaming hot bowl of soup or a jacket potato with cheddar to spaghetti bolognese or "Züri geschnetzeltes" to a juicy hunk of meat cooked over an open fire. Or sometimes just a bowl of chips. Depends on mood, money, time and location

Lunch is always in the lodge. I'm a vegetarian, so finding something good to eat at some ski areas is next to impossible and generally I have to settle for a slice of cheese pizza.

But at other places like Deer Valley, I can get a great hummus sandwich or veggie chili.

Eng_ch, one of the best on mountain lunches I've ever had was on a mountain side in Zermatt. Hearty vegetable minestrone with homemade bread and an assortment of cheeses complimented by a good German beer. Yum!

Then there was the lunch on the mountain side in Cervinia. Classic! I have no idea what the food was, but because of the communication gap, when we ordered what we thought was 2 glasses of wine turned out to be 2 litres!!!!! The rest of the day is a bit hazy.

If I skied more often, I would almost certainly pack a lunch because the lodge food is pricey!

I think the best lunch I've ever had was at Heavenly. We got a steak or chicken breast, BBQ'd it and had sides of some sort with it. After that it would be a French thing - Racelette or Fondue on the side of the mountain, sunshine and espresso (cafe noir to the french) It amounts to a long lunch hour. And yes lunch is an experience, which is typically french. American's eat fast and don't enjoy their meal the French say. And the wine.........

Courchevel is reputed to be fiendishly expensive - and it can be - but I know a place where you can get a massive omelette de montagne that comes on a 12"+ plate and covers it and costs a massive 5 euros  That will certainly keep you going for the rest of the day

Europe does lunch right!!!!!

If I'm feeling frugal or wary of lodge calories, I bring a sandwich and fruit. Buying is an option though. Food is still reasonably priced at my hill, and they've tried to introduce some healthy options. Yay California!

The best lunch for me is always breakfast. I have some form of protein & carb on the way up in the car. This year it's been a homemade egg sandwich each time - bagel / muffin, egg & cheese, tossed in the toaster oven while I get ready to leave and in a baggie for the car (and portability to the slopes). I'm vegetarian (lacto-, ovo-) so I used veggie breakfast "sausage" patties the last couple times for an extra boost.

That, plus chai in a thermos, and maybe a handful of granola or crackers & pre-sliced cheese at a short rest break, gets me through til late afternoon. Dinner is huge though!
