Leukemia Marathon

Ski Spirit

Ski Diva Extraordinaire
Hi All,
If you've been reading Epic, you know that I posted about registering to train and walk/run the Nike Women's marathon in San Francisco on October 18,
2008.

It benefits blood cancer research for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and I am also doing it to achieve a personal goal that I never would have considered possible, except for the training provided by this group.

Blood cancer victims, their families and I would very much appreciate any donations you can make.

Please see my webpage at https://pages.teamintraining.org/sj/nikesf08/mgmc
to make an online donation. It is, of course, tax deductible.

If anyone has any tips to offer on training, setting up your own blog, fundraising, etc. I would be very happy to hear them.

I will be creating a blog (as soon as I figure out how to) to keep you all entertained as I progress through the training...so you all share the pleasure and PAIN with me!!!

FYI, at least 75% of the funds donated to this cause are guaranteed to go to the Leukemia Lymphoma society as opposed to travel/race costs.

Hi Ski Spirit!!

I would happily donate! I just looked at the web page though and all the details seem to suggest you want an American address. Will it take my details with a Scottish address?

Also, my husband is a bit of a running addict and coaches within his local club. He did the Boston Marathon in April and then six days later did one back here in Scotland (yes he is mad!). I'm sure he would be happy to give some advice if you had any specific questions.

Scottish Girlie,
Hi, thanks for the offer. I really appreciate it!! I will check w/LLS (I'm sure they would do everything possible not to miss any opportunities!!!!) and will PM you. Many thanks also re: advice. I will definitely keep him in mind for specific questions!!!

Many, many thanks for the other contributions!!!! I REALLY appreciate the help!!!! I will PM or email you my personal gratitude!!!!

Excellent Ski Spirit!!

Also meant to say good on you for taking on such a challenge. Go girlie, go!!!! Such a fantastic thing to do!!

It such a shame you didn't live here 'cos you could have joined my hubby's running pack!! He coached a pile of people through spring marathons this year and about a dozen or so got PBs. Rob's a 2:50hr marathon runner.

Scottishgirlie, stick around here. The more you interact with SkiSpirit, the more you'll come to realize how inspirational and amazing she is.
I can't wait to meet up with her and ski. I only hope I can keep up!

Ispirational Marathoner

Wow, thanks, but you guys are way too complimentary...I'm not a fantastic athlete...that what's so great about the whole thing!

I've trained for a metric century and gotten through it, so I know each person is capable of doing way more than they imagine (then there's the women's self defense class experience, being way more strong than you can believe..more on that later..assisting with a class in 2 weeks).

FYI, I'm walk/running the marathon and I'm on a walk team. I used to run 10Ks about 15-20 years ago but did it mainly for social/sight seeing purposes (Bay to Breakers, Wharf to Wharf, etc). So, my main goal is just to finish and live through a marathon.

As for being inspirational, thank you very much!!!! I think all of us are inspirational on one level or another....you don't have to do a marathon to help people, sometimes just a smile means a lot.......I also have my own selfish reasons for doing that marathon; it's part of maintaining my own health/achieving a goal I've dreamed of, etc.

I am dedicating it to someone I know who has leukemia and is very ill. I didn't start out to do this with her in mind but since TNT ensures that you have an "honoree"
(blood cancer patient) that your team is participating for, I decided that I would ask her if I could devote the race to her and she said that would be wonderful!!

Her name is Anne. In spite of her illness, she remains remarkably calm and peaceful, she writes beautiful poetry, loves cats and SHE is inspirational to all of us who know her.

Good job! I hope all goes well with training and the run!

Ski Spirit, I used to coach cycling teams for LLS and can attest to how amazing this organization is. All the best in your training--enjoy it! The events are life-changing.:clap::clap:

SueNJ,
I can see why you would say that. Amazing group of people and the LLS really does good work; I'm really glad I signed up for it!

Many, many thanks also SueNJ (as well as ScottishGirlie, SnowHot and Ski Diva) for the donations. The money is going to an excellent cause!!!!!

First day of training last Saturday. I will post blog location shortly to document the experience...shopping spree(s), pain/suffering, the whole experience. I think it's going to be fantastic!!!!

Ski Spirit, whenever the going got tough with training, I always, always thought of the torturous treatments my honored patient(s) had to endure, and it really helped me to put things quickly in perspective. After all, I chose to train for an endurance event--treatment with chemotherapy and radiation is an endurance event no one chooses to subject themselves to.

Keep that great outlook! I look forward to following your experience on your blog.

Excellent suggestion SueNJ! Very good points to remember. The impact that LLS makes is obvious when your hear people talk about how its saved their life (or the life of a loved one).

I have to admit though that what works best for me to get through difficult moments in training, etc. is to think of a treat of some kind. There was one time that I was cycling up a very nasty hill and I kept myself going the whole time by imagining that an incredibly gorgeous man was waiting for me at the top with an ice-cold glass of lemonade (in the more desperate moments, a Margarita!). Remarkably effective in my case.....(this was before I got married).

Just a quick update to let you all know that I have finally updated my blog re: training and self-defense assisting. Also want to share the great news; I have a corporate sponsor!!! It's our company's audit firm BPM (Burr, Pilger, Meyer). Don't know how much they are contributing, but it's very exciting news. Still have money to raise but friends, family, acquaintances, ski buddies, Bears, Divas, etc. have been incredibly helpful. Thank you all!

Anyone have any walk/running music to recommend. So far hip hop/electronica seem to work best (strong steady beat) but I'm open to suggestions!

Bump...........How's it going SkiSpirit!

Hobbling Ski Spirit

Thanks for asking SnowHot. Sorry I haven't posted much at all lately. Busy ....although less so with marathon prep as I strained my knee 2 weeks ago (2nd degree strain I think). I was walk/running around a track for 2 hours. It didn't occur to me that that would put pressure more on one side than the other and the left leg(especially knee) is weaker than the right.

So, have been hobbling for the past 2 weeks ("Ouch, ouch!). :injured: Am finally able to walk w/out pain. Won't be doing the SF marathon (2nd half marathon) as practice as planned...a little too long for me at this point. If possible, I may do a 5K walk with friends at SF marathon. We'll see!

I did make fundraising minimum--yeah, glad that's over!
Our auditors agreed to be my corporate sponsor and threw in $500, so I will actually be over requirement. Have to say I really hate asking people for money but it really is a very good cause.

Other that, we are about to go on vacation to Ashland, OR to see some plays.

We've been invited to a wedding in Italy (Umbria!!!!!) and Mr. SS doesn't think we should go.
I'll have to post on that separately!!!!

Quick update after being absent for so long!

First we are going to Italy for the wedding, very happy about
that!
Knee is much better... but felt like I should go to half marathon instead of full. Think its a good decision.

Made the fund-raising minimum. Many, many thanks for contributions. ScottishGirlie - I still have the cash you sent me and, if its ok, I'll give to a teammate of mine who needs to still make her fundraising goal??????????? Or, if you like, I'll submit
it over my goal.
Sorry absent for so long. Busy, busy, busy but really looking forward to ski season. Need to catch up on Co Diva trip.
