I have absolutely nothing to wear! Not even any thermals in my wardrobe  Nor do I have much of an idea of what exactly makes for a good ski outfit. Advice?

Layers! Where in Australia are you, Ice Angel? It's the end of the season so there should be some good bargains around.

I don't think I ever wore thermal underwear in Aus, it normally is not horrendously cold but it certainly can get wet, so Gortex is a wonderful thing. An extra pair of gloves is also very handy.

Have fun shopping and tell us all the details.

Merino wool as a baselayer., Brands by Icebreaker, Smartwool and Ibex which are the three I think are best and softest!

Maybe it will help if people post what kind of stuff they wear to give you some ideas. My layers look like this:

Top:
-Sports bra
-Wicking tank (sometimes, not always)
-Long sleeve baselayer (I use REI's Midweight as I can't wear wool)
-Fleece vest
-Softshell (I also want to get a down sweater to use in this layer on colder days)
-Outer waterproof shell (either coaching shell or one of my personal ones)

Bottom:
-Undies (need to invest more in technical kinds)
-Wicking long underwear (REI's Midweight)
-Smartwool ski socks
-Outer waterproof pants

Head:
-Powderfish gaitor or balaclava
-Helmet

Hands:
-My super duper Swany Toasters Mittens in leather

How in the WORLD do you wear that much on top??? I wear a sports bra, a tee, and a Capilene 3 and a waterproof shell. SOMETIMES if its FREEEEEEZING I can manage a lightweight fleece vest underneath. My new down jacket is going to be worn with just a lightweight base layer underneath.

:noidea:

If I were wearing down I would nix everything except the midweight (and the bra). I also don't know what kind of temps you're skiing in but I spent much of last winter in -10 degree temps. Warming to 0 if I was lucky. Oh, and my fleece vest is a very lightweight one and the tank is a very thin wicking layer.

I kinda figured. But still. I've skiied 15 degrees and still wore almost exactly what I said above. We shall see how it goes this winter with colder weather. I'm actually jealous.

Also, keep in mind that when I'm coaching I'm not generating as much heat as when I'm skiing on my own so I have to allow for that. I prefer to open up vents to let heat out than end up freezing on the mountain with not enough layers. Here are some links to my gear.

Vest (last year's version)
REI MTS Midweight layers (this is basically the weight of a t-shirt but is wicking)
Powder Fish Gaiter
Swany Toaster Mittens

how many layers do you think i'd need under a patagonia primo down? i need to know in order to figure out what size i may be and its hard to tell how many layers until you actually spend a few days outside on the slopes.
i wear a jacket now is a hand-me-down thats very warm (supposedly) and under that i wear two midlayers and a thermal tank top.
i ordered a medium but from what oragejuice said it may be a bit big (120, 5"3.)

hi!
where will you be skiing? i think that makes a big difference. in aus you need very waterproof things but if youre skiing somewhere colder i think you'd need very warm things.
im hoping to get some good wool thermals and extra socks in the end of season sales.

I think it depends how you will be skiing as well. When I was learning to ski I got so hot so I didn't wear many layers, maybe 1 thermal and an insulted jacket. Then I gt a bit better and it all just seemed a bit easier and I started to get cold so I wore 1 lightweight Icebreaker top, 1 heavierweight Icebreaker top, sometimes a softshell and a waterproof jacket on top. On my bottom half I have Icebreaker longjohns and insulated salopettes and smartwool socks. I also wear a helmet and a buff/neckgaitor and I think they do as much to keep me warm as all the layers. I have started skiing harder runs now off piste and again I tend to get hotter doing this so would probably leave the softshell off.

If you are learning to ski you will be hot though.

Us Eastern seaboard Diva's usually have the coldest temperatures to ski in. -20 deg Celsuis is a norm in January at Tremblant. So, my layers would be:
1. sport bra
2. base layer - either Mark's (Canadian retailer), or MEC
3. Turtleneck - polyproplene - avalanche or Salomon
4. Soft shell or fleece - ss-Columbia, or fleece-Helly hansen
5. Jacket - Rossi -see avaitar
6. Bottom base layer - fleece - expedition weight from Sierra Design
7. Ski Pant - Rossi - freeride pant
8. Socks - avalache brand or Hot Chilly
9. Gloves or Mitts - Avalanche or my CSIA gloves (not sure who's brand)
Avalanche is a Canadian clothing manufacturer. They make stuff for our climate. They have store about 10 min from the mountain in Mt. Tremblant village. At the year end sale I picked up a "coaches coat" to wear after skiing and to work. Can't wait to try it.
10. Helmet - Salomon and goggles - A frames by Oakely
11. Bandit fleece triangle - CSIA store, best thing I ever bought. Not sure who made it, but the new ones aren't as good.

And I can ski in all those layers. You need them here. As temperatures warm up I drop the base layer or the soft shell/fleece, change the bottom base to standard weight instead of the expedition weight. In spring I have a completely different suit from Phenix, and it will have to be above freezing to wear it.

If it were me I'd be down to just a baselayer with that. In fact, if I buy the down sweater I'm thinking about this season for days that I wear that I'll probably be down to baselayer, down sweater and outer jacket.

1) The medium should fit. I am about 2" shorter but similiar weight and the medium in this brand fits me. For bottoms though, the small fits better. The cut on this jacket is relatively narrow as I recall.
2) I have the Icefield ( very similiar only sythetic ) and was comfortable in it in a wide range of temps with a single mid-weight layer underneath. I tried wearing a vest underneath on a very cold day once. It was way too hot.

I usually go skiing at Mt. Hotham.

That's true, Aus doesn't get very cold. Last time I went, I wore a pair of long johns, ski socks and ski pants, a long sleeve base layer, sweater and ski jacket, gloves and a beanie. It did get a bit cold when I was sitting on the lifts, but apart from that I was very warm.
