Lessons: How many, how often?

How many lessons do you take per ski season? Are they private or group? And when do you prefer to take them -- in the beginning of the ski year, or throughout the season?

I take a 3 day clinic offered each year at the start of the season for CSIA memebers. It's group sessions, but the atmosphere is fun and getting back out of skis. I might get 1 or 2 days in before the clinic depending on conditions. After that it depends on time and money. This year I'm planning a few small group lessons with a specialized instructor. There are 2 other instructors from our local hill that are going to go in with me and do 1/2 or full days with this guy. We all want to get our next instructor levels and need the extra help.

This coming season, I am hoping to take 4 or 5 private, 2 hr. lessons at Okemo with my freestyle coach, and a 1/2 day private with another instructor when I'm in Colorado for the Diva summit in March. No planned clinics for me this season as I'm directing whatever theoretical ski budget I have for the private lessons at Okemo.... Both of my daughters have grown considerably and will need new parkas and pants, sigh. My 14 yo has grown an inch in the past month or so and is now just slightly taller than I am! At least their new skis and snowboards that I bought at the start of last season will still work for them.

Thankfully I don't need any new equipment (is this possible?) and only minimal clothing: a down sweater to wear under my Cloudveil jacket and a couple of new tops and long johns.... I usually tip $10 per hour of lessons for private coaching so these lessons get pretty expensive. I'm planning to spring for a contract for unlimited waxing and tune ups for my skis this season too, which will be nice.

If money is not an issue, I'd love to have regular coached skiing. But alas, I don't have bottomless pocket books...

I clearly have things in my mind that I'd like to work on. So my situation suites more private lesson than group lesson. Or, it could be a specialty clinic that address the topic of my interest that I'd attend. Those tend to be group lessons, which I found useful, sharing the "AHA!" moment with my fellow gapers.

So my MO is, roughly speaking:
- one multi-day and/or specialty clinic every other season (the 2 years is to allow enough free skiing and pratice time in, based on how many days a season I ski. Though since I skied a lot last season, I could "accelerate" that clinic schedule)
- "some" privates in the year I'm not taking the multi-day clinic. The amount depends on how often I ski and where (availability of instructor)
- random 1 or 2 hr long group lessons are not my thing these days, but when I sometimes get a package that include lessons, I still use it. And occasionally, I do get a tip or two that helps.

Timing-wise, I like to ski a bit before taking any lessons. It's a waste of time if I keep falling over, or fussing about equipments on the first 1-2 day of the season, which I tend to do. Other than that, any time of the season is a good time for lessons. Though in reality, very few ski school even have classes past April 1. (I typically ski till mid-April most years, I don't need to worry about taking lesson on last skiing day of the season)

I never used to take lessons and then I found out that they really help. I like to take lessons when I'm at a mountain I don't really know all that well. For some reason, I never take lessons in the East except for the epic clinic at Stowe. I did the ski week at Taos and I do think that it really helped to improve my skiing.
