Late season skiing

Are there any resorts that are known for their late season skiing? We're talking about a ski trip, but don't really have any idea where to go or when.

What I'd like:
sunny days (we don't have many of them here in MI in the winter!)
avoid spring break
discounts!
nature's beauty

What we don't need:
crowds
lots of night life
overpriced accommodations, restaurants, shops

Anyone have a favorite they'd recommend?

A-Basin!
Fun, fun place, usually open through May, snow-dependent.
How "late" are we talking about here? How far do want to/can you travel?

I skied at A-Basin last year in mid-May, the conditions were great with no crowds at all. I'm hoping to do another trip out there again in May of this year.

And no one will have earned that trip more!

Snowbird tends to stay open as long as possible. I'm guessing they'll run the tram into June this year since we have so much snow.

Jenny, I've heard that Park City has some nice Spring skiing as well, though I can't speak from experience....

By after spring break, I'm assuming you mean after 3rd week of April?? Look for highest possible base elevations. PCMR tends to burn up at the base, as does Canyons. Snowbird for sure will be open, as theyhost the PSIA National Academy (a few hundred, not a huge event) every April late in the month, always to good snow.

Mammoth, CA has a long season. Not real easy to get or stay there. Tahoe, depending on the kind of snow year they're having, usually makes it to May 1.

And, of course, the aforementioned A-Basin (Loveland possibly as well) is a for-sure.

Good deals will be in abundance at Tahoe (plus tons to do when not skiing, if staying in South LT). Snowbird's never cheap unless you stay in SLC. A-Basin will have deals in surrounding towns. Might even be some steals at otherwise pricey lodging @ Keystone. I stayed at Keystone Lodge once when skiing A-Basin in late season. Nice place. Wayyyyyy off-peak rates.

Prefer to drive or fly? CO can be easily driven from MI-depends on your time frame/allotment. Others require air travel.

I was thinking sometime later in April probably, but the whole thing is still just talk at this point. Figured I'd gather some info from the ladies who know, to help us decide! But my husband thinks it's a good idea, too, and we don't really have any other vacation plans this year.

We'd probably fly - I'm not a very good car rider for that length of time - too antsy. Flying would be into either Colorado Springs or Denver?

We skied Breckenridge/Keystone once years ago, when I was still a little too skittish to enjoy it fully. My husband and the others went to A Basin one of the days, but I didn't. So this could be a great opportunity.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm amazed at how you guys jump right on things! Not only do I have things to check out, but from the quick glance I gave earlier, it looks like several of you have trips planned now! And all from asking a simple question . . .

You're very welcome  ! That's what we do here. Minus all the guy-sarcasm on the other forums. So hang around awhile and join us - or at the very least, let us know what you decide, and afterward, how it all went! :ski2:

Park City

Thanks Robyn.

It depends on how late in Spring. Except for Snowbird, most Utah resorts close mid - April. And conditions get sketchy in Park City as the season ends.

THIS IS THE 2007 DATE
Arapahoe Basin Closing Day Extravaganza June 3rd 2007
All ski resorts in National Forest lands are required to close after a specific number of days, But it should be close to the first weekend in June. Bring your rock skis!

Sunshine Village in Alberta is great late in the season. It's very high, so the snow stays light, and it has plenty of variety to keep you happy. We've been twice in March and April and it was not crowded at all.

Timberline on Mt. Hood is open into the summer; that said, after Memorial Day it's pretty much ski racers up on Palmer and you need to be able to ski black diamonds. Before then, well, hubby and I skied the Magic Mile (blue cruiser) on Memorial Day proper last year, and there's a LOT more snow this year!

No guarantee about clear days, though. It is Western Oregon, after all.

I'll try to post a photo...not sure if it will work, though!

I suggest Squaw Valley. The photo was just a few days ago. Snow is great, weather is sunny and in the high 40's these days. Squaw is never crowded, you never really wait on a lift because there are so many lifts and so much terrain, everyone can spread out quite nicely! Lots of great accommodations nearby, reasonably priced. Many with attached ski tickets/packages. Squaw has tickets for consecutive day skiing (2, 3, 4 days etc.). Much cheaper that way. You'll LOVE this place, nothing like it.

How late does Squaw stay open for the season?

Great suggestions. Some resorts close earlier more due to lack of people than lack of snow - people get thinking of other activities, like hiking, biking, golf and so on! We ski Wildcat in April till closing and it's empty, and did Killington one Mother's Day, with a brunch break! Anyway, there's been so much snow out west this year that it seems a lot of places would be great and it'd just be a matter of knowing which mountains are staying open and deciding which to go to! Very tempting. :ski2:
