Late March Banff skiing?

I have been renting only on Turo for the last 2 years or so for multiple ski trips and have had mostly positive experience.
Having learned from Olesya's experience and what I read on another ski forum about Turo rentals in the USA and Canada, I gave it a try last season when the trip was longer than a week. Since I own a RAV4, it was nice to pick a similar RAV4. Instead of having to figure out how to use a different brand of SUV.

As with VRBO/AirBnB, what's available depends on location. Prices can change, sometimes daily. I watched one potential Turo rental price go down daily for a week or so and then start going back up. That happened was months before the period I had in mind.

We are flying Air Canada out of Newark on non-stop into Calgary. Will probably rent a car so my husband can explore while we ski. Seems more convenient to stay in Banff but Canmore is a lot cheaper for 2 bd places. We don't care about nightlife and if we have a car, my H can drive us to Banff to catch the shuttles to the mountains. Seem like a reasonable idea?

I'm not a local there and don't know the odds of snow on the roads. I know when I was there in mid April the roads were slick with a thin coating of snow. But I mention this because there have been at least a couple mentions of AWD. AWD is not nearly as good as snow tires (or studs like @Olesya C mentioned) for driving on slick/icy/snowy roads. I know we've chatted about this a lot here and there are many Car and Driver type articles out there about it.

Studded tires are legal in Alberta, but not sure you'll find those on a rental. But do ask for snow tires and 4WD.
Last trip out I got a Rav4. It was good. The trip 2 months before that I got a Buick Envision. It started to snow on the way to the airport, but it was all good, (first of October!)

For SUV or cars from "major" rental companies, I have a hard time finding information on their tires when renting online. I have seen it on Turo though. I def would prefer to have snow rated tires while we are there in case it does snow.

The advantage of Turo is that you get to ask questions directly from the owner of a particular vehicle.

With a rental company, doesn't matter what you reserved if what you want doesn't exist on the lot when it's time to pick up a car. Although I would hope that SUVs are set up decently at an airport that far north. For sure, getting a car with good tires in SLC is easier than in ABQ.

I think I mentioned I was offered snow tires as an upgrade there but yeah, you probably have to call the YYC office to see who has them and I agree, there's no guarantee you'll get that car.

From doing extensive research into rental cars with decent tires in Alaska, I learned the commercial companies might “say” they do, but they probably don’t. You can gamble, reserve an AWD SUV, and do some research ahead of time to see what stock tires are “ok” in snow, because the rental will likely have stock tires on it. Turo may be your better option.

For Alaska I found a local company that does “winter rentals” with snow tires and block heaters, which a friend who lives up there recommended. We ended up with a 1/2 ton truck - not the most ideal option, but not the worst - but it’s guaranteed to have winter tires. This is when I wish I could just pack my car and take it with me, it’s a beast in snow!

Yes, that's exactly right. For Anchorage area there are plenty of cars with snow tires, a lot if not most of them are studded. I gave up on rental companies for now, because in Anchorage in winter having studded snow tires is kind of crucial (at least for me) and you can't really get that through rental companies. With Turo you know which car you are getting with what specific tires. I have asked Turo car owners various questions, for example not only confirming whether the car has winter studded tires, but also what specific brand and make the tires are and then research them to make sure they are decent tires. I don't know about Banff in April, but I can say in Anchorage I needed snow studded tires in April more than a few times.

Thinks my home area. End of march/early April is great and usually not that busy at all three eastern Rockies resorts. Canmore has great and more options for accommodation (apartment style etc) and loads wood excellent restaurants and shops. Banff is in the national park and the town is slightly more quaint and touristy but lovely. So both are fine and it is not really a big difference in driving (+15 min approx).
We have definitely suffered a drought this past month but a very good base remains from December (record snow) and expect there will be lots more snow this coming month (usually our highest snow month). For non skiers there should be lots to do—in town plus some of the lower elevation, packed out hiking trails.

Thanks for all the advice. I booked a condo in Canmore for the stay and rented an SUV with snow tires on Turo. We will take the free shuttle in Banff to slopes and DH will drop us and pick us up in Banff. Planning a day in the middle and the day we head back to Calgary to explore with DH and son and give our ski legs a rest too. Now hoping that the weather patterns bring the snow back before then!

Have a great time! Banff is so beautiful and the skiing can be great too.

@wernerslab : OpenSnow has an article about spring skiing that focuses on how to consider temperature and aspect when deciding where the snow is likely to be the best on a given day and time period within that day. The first day at a new resort, if there are shadows then good to pay attention to what terrain is in the shade in the mornings, and what stays in the shade most of the afternoon.

Thanks @marzNC. I was just reading the ski talk thread about their upcoming meetup and getting useful info about just using the shuttles to get to the mountain. I will check out Open snow again but have been looking just at weather forecasts for LL.. My tentative plan is to put us both in lessons at Sunshine for the 3 days we are there. That lets my son go and try the more expert terrain. At LL, I will put him in half day privates for the same reason and I will ski in the AM solo. I plan to do a mtn host tour (may do it more than once) and then ski afternoons with my son. LL does not seem to offer more advanced group lessons (based on their website) hence he gets the lessons and I will try to put into practice what I have been coached on this year.

When looking at OpenSnow more than a few days out, it's useful to read the Daily Snow for a given destination. As with the mid-Atlantic and LCC/BCC, resorts that seem to be close together have distinct micro-climates that mean storm totals and weather can be quite different.

I'm in Banff right now, and conditions are out of this world. Very cold, though! It was 5 degrees F at the summit of Sunshine today!
Your timing was spot on! I heard Utah is having a terrible season. I was in Taos a week ago and heading for Crested Butte next Tuesday. If I could get out of it, I would as super pricey slopeside lodging…
