Have you ever heard of a marathon swim? Apparently there used to be one at Lake George and it's back for 2016. There are 14 individual swimmers along with teams of varying numbers. Seven of the individuals are women. Everyone is being tracked LIVE. The first group started at 3:00pm Sept. 17.

There has long been a pro-circuit in long distance open water swimming. https://worldprofessionalmarathonswimmingfederation.com/events/marathon-swims/
One of the more well known swims in the mid-Atlantic is the Atlantic City race. There is also a very competitive race from Long Island to Connecticut. I used to love the Lake Memphremagog race from Newport VT to Magog Quebec, CA. https://dailynews.openwaterswimming.com/2016/04/marathoning-in-lake-memphremagog-with.html

My DH has been coaching open water (as well as pool swimming) for decades and has had numerous individual marathon winners and Pan Pacific Games medalists. He's traveled to Australia, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Spain, Hawaii, Canada, and Paraguay for pro-circuit races. He's also had 25+ swimmers complete the English Channel swim. Oh, and the "around Manhattan" swim always has a full complement of competitors - now that is nuts in my book.

Every sport has its own little universe.

Around Manhattan! Guess the water is more or less clean these days. Yep, every sport has it's own universe. Learned that when I was playing in table tennis tournaments, back before TT was in the Olympics even though it's a major sport in most of the world.

Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate this weekend. The race was cancelled due to high winds and rough water. Sounds like they will try again next year. It's a charity event.

" . . .
There were a lot of hopes, dreams and goals swimming on Lake George. But the dark clouds and stiff wind did not bode well for a tranquil lake. "There was a strong headwind in Ticonderoga," said Olympic marathon swimmer Alex Meyer. "There were white caps on the lake and a 15 mph headwind coming straight up the lake [and right into the faces of the swimmers]."

The escort kayakers were having problems under these conditions as the winds continued to build. "One crew boat was taking on water and there were two kayakers in the water and another had to be replaced," reported a pod leader.

It wasn't looking good as the sun started to set and the race still had to continue through the night.

It was a telling sign when the most experienced English Channel swimmer of the group, Marcy MacDonald called her swim. Soon thereafter, the race was called off for safety reasons. . . ."

Funny, DH just got home from a 5k race and mentioned the Lake George event. Two of his Master's swimmers were in it. I know they are disappointed.
