Kicking off the season in earnest in Tahoe: Jan 9-10

I popped in for a few days of skiing, gaming, and hiking via arrangements from my host casino in Reno. I was glad I stayed in Reno - I always enjoy the restaurant scene there and there are certain dining and shopping spots I like to visit.

I reached out to @SnowHot and arranged to meet up with her and her hubby to ski Mt Rose on Thursday the 9th. She and I had a lot of fun whooping around the mostly empty trails. Beautiful blue skies, mild temps, it was really delightful (as usual - I've never had a bad time at the 'Rose.) And of course, I really enjoyed talking to @SnowHot on the lifts.

She took me through a little area I've always been curious about: "Wild Horse." It's designated as a "Kids Area" but there we no children there that day (school day, early season, etc.) We did a few fun whirls through the forest.

After a morning of lapping runs on both sides of the resort, we met up with her husband and headed to lunch. After lunch, Phil was kind enough to wax my skis for me which REALLY helped the next day at Northstar.

I was at Northstar for a day last season, but it was very snowy, so I didn't get to enjoy the GORGEOUS scenery and views of the lake that I got on this visit.

Did some skiing on my own, then met up with @santacruz skier and her friend to do a few runs before lunch. She is very familiar with the layout of Northstar so I got to experience some runs I may not have chosen on my own (but definitely enjoyed!)

After the run on Drifter, we met up with @Bookworm in the Zephyr lodge for lunch. It was great getting to meet and chat with these ladies! I skied a nice long run with @santacruz skier 's friend, Carol, after lunch, then skied back to the car to head back to Reno before after-school traffic hit.

Sidebar: Nothing to do w skiing but Friday night, I did well at the casino, hitting two "handpay" jackpots. (Video is of the 2nd.) I was betting aggressively (for me) because there was a special event whereby basically, I could make my "high roller" status for the following year as they were multiplying points by 10x for folks who already had a certain status.
Yes, I did make my status for 2026, AND put $ from my winnings in the bank Saturday morning so I wouldn't put it all back! :bounce:

After the bank run, I did some shopping in the Old Reno Post Office "The Basement" and then headed to Rosewood Nature Study, which is technically in Reno, but quite near Sparks. I always enjoy a peaceful walk and bird watching there (they offer free use of binoculars from the visitors center.)

Did some other stuff around Sparks (mediocre casino & lunch) then returned my (2nd) rental Jeep at the airport, and rode back to my hotel via the free airport shuttle. Got back to my hotel to freshen up, and walked over to the St Thomas Cathedral for Saturday evening Mass.

After church, strolled over to Sabrina's West Street Kitchen. It had been on my radar to try, but they only had weekend hours for dinner. The food was excellent and healthful, but I learned that Sabrina sold the restaurant recently to a new owner. Curious what the new group will do with the menu/offerings.

I'm scheduled to go back to Reno March 9-12th. As I'll have 2 EPIC days to use, will likely do 2 days at Northstar (it's so easy to get to from my hotel!) and hopefully a day at Diamond Peak.

@Bookworm It was great to meet you, and I enjoy Northstar, too. I'm a blue cruiser fan, and there are many routes to choose from. They do a terrific job grooming, as well. It surely helped my outlook for the ski day that there was very little traffic on most runs I took.
Granted there is a little schlep from parking spot to shuttle stop, but I didn't find it too difficult to manage. I really like that I just jump on 80 from my hotel then a little trek on the state highway right into the resort. Sometimes winding up and down a mountain road can be a little unnerving for me.

@Amie H I had never noticed the shadow of the Wildhorse sign at the entrance. Its almost like mother nature is laying it down there. Nice.
It was good to see you, glad to share my home mountain with you!!

Seeing your videos of Northstar, I see some things I miss from my days of being a N* skier. Its just so hard for me to go to Truckee to ski with Rose is so close and so easy.

Oh, I'm just realizing while I'm re-reading this that I skipped over the part where I had to return my rental car back to the airport the first time because I was losing air in the rear tire. It was a little unnerving but since I'm really familiar with the Reno area and since I was only 10 minutes away, I just drove it over there and they gave me a new jeep and also ended up refunding me a bunch of money for the rental. @SnowHot 's husband mentioned the worn tread on the tires earlier.

This was the second time I've had a poorly maintained vehicle from Budget @Reno airport. Last year they gave me a GMC Acadia that was burning oil. I wasn't sure I was gonna make it back from Northstar.

Because it was easy to switch out vehicles, I wasn't all that bothered but i'm thinking about what I want to do in March.

I thought that shadow looked super cool in the video!

I’ll be here and happy to join the crew at Northstar. Yes, I am really here this time!

Hey gals, I canceled my 2nd Tahoe trip in March.

If you saw my Duluth, MN thread, my good friend had to cancel this past weekend on me, so we are planning another trip together and I need to have the days to take off. Also, I used up the rest of my multi-day pass in Beaver Creek this weekend.

Plus, my Wednesday morning aqua fitness classes are getting popular so I want to be home to teach.

The balance of my skiing this season will probably be in the Midwest. Though you never know: I've skied Tahoe Memorial Day weekend before
