K2 Pontoons

Finally, the snow returned to the PNW after a three week drought. So, I finally had the opportunity to try out the K2 Pontoons. I've skied them twice so far.

Yesterday, we had about 4" of new fluffy snow, and we encountered some deep wind blown pockets. In other places, nasty ice moguls peaked above the new snow.

Today, the snow was deep and creamy, but wasn't as fluffy as yesterday, and the icy moguls were all gone. Although temperatures were similar both days (high 20s to low 30s), the snow just seemed a little thicker today. Maybe my legs were tired from yesterday.:D

I'm 5'7" and 145 pounds.

Manufacturer K2

Category & Dimensions POW 160/130/120

1=Poor 2= Fair 3=Average 4=Very Good 5=Excellent
1 2 3 4 5

Stability 5 (in powder) 2 (on groomers) 1 (on ice)
Forgiveness 5 (in powder) 2 (on groomers) 1 (on ice)
Grip 1 (on ice) 2 (on soft groomers)

Crud 3
Powder 5
Ice 1
Overall Impression: These skis are great in powder, especially when it's untracked!! I find the skis more challenging in other situations.

Tested Length Felt:
Just Right

Ski Sidecut Felt: These skis have a tiny bit of sidecut, just enough to get you back to the lift after you finish a powder run. It's interesting to note that the skis are rockered, which makes them ski like a much shorter ski than their dimensions would make you expect. The skis' sidecut actually exists in the short part of the ski that isn't rockered or tapered. But, you don't really need as much sidecut anyway because this is NOT a groomer ski.

Ski Flex Felt: It's a decambered ski.

Notes: These skis are extremely fun and and confidence-inspiring in powder. In powder, they make great short, medium, and long turns. They definitely put a smile on face.

On groomers and ice, the skis feel big and awkward to me, but your mileage may vary. I can definitely imagine that on the feet of a more advanced skier than myself (I'm an intermediate), the skis might perform better on groomers and ice.

In the lift line and when riding the lift, the skis look ridiculous to me, like big clown shoes.:D Once I left the lift and the groomers, the skis seemed just right!

I give these skis a big thumbs up. What can I say? They're just fun!!!

Cloudpeak, I am amazed at your review. I have no reason to buy this ski in my current ski conditions, but I have wondered about the Pontoon a great deal and am so happy to read this review. Maybe something worth trying if I should ever happen to be in the west with a huge dump of snow.

Sounds like the Pontoon is a bunch of fun.

Yes, unless you get a large amount of snow, these would not be the ski of choice. One of our sons tried a pair yesterday as well. He's a much better skier than I am, and his take on the skis was that they'd make a great heli or cat ski. He loved them on untracked powder and found them to be pretty annoying on cut up snow and the groomers. He said that other than for fresh tracks he would have preferred to have skied his Mantras yesterday.

I agree with the heli and cat skiing part of his review, but I would definitely try these skis again on a deep snow day because in deep, soft snow I thought the skis were a blast!

Nice! My husband has a pair. I've only tried Spatulas before, and these seem... ever so slightly more practical! Though I suppose I probably don't really NEED another pair of powder skis, what with a pair of 180 Big Stix 106 and 183 Gotamas in the garage. But they do look fun!

Oh, if only we could ski resort powder without having to get to and from the lift.....sigh!:(

cloudpeak, where do you ski? oh, at stevens! are you part of the rv gang?

Yes, I ski primarily at Stevens Pass. What's the "rv gang?"

If you're ever at Stevens and want to meet up for a few runs, send me a PM.

The season has been fantastic! I'll be up there tomorrow, but I'm planning on Crystal for Sat. If we change our minds, I'll let you know.

I probably was with the gang you saw. Four of us were on Pontoons that weekend. We saw another guy on 'Toons, too, but he was with another group. We all had a blast!! The backside and 7th were unbelievably fun on those big powder skis!

Because the snow level is supposed to stay around 500 ft., I'm hoping the snow will be light and fluffy tomorrow.
