K2 Phat Luv vs. Volkl Aura

I'm looking to buy a pair of powder skis this season and was hoping to get some opinions. Right now I'm torn between the K2 Phat Luv and the Volkl Aura. Does anyone have opinions on either of these skis or recomendations for other powder skis.

I bought the Phat Luvs this year (got a great deal), but haven't even had them mounted yet. I'm very excited...have heard only great things about them.

When I was leaving the Snow Expo with them, I was stopped severa; times by men & women telling me what a great ski I had just bought. The women consistently told me they don't ski on anything else (but they had older versions with a slightly smaller waist <102) and men saying their wives/GF etc. loved them.

Next week I will take them in to have the binding mounted and hopefully Ullr will keep blessing Colorado with this snow and I'll be able to get them out soon!:ski2:

I also bought Phat Luvs this year (mine are mounted and ready!). I'm really excited to try them. (They're gorgeous to boot!)

In general (and I don't know if this holds true for Phat vs. Aura) Volkls are stiffer, while the K2 tends to be more damp. So, it really depends on what you like. I'm going to demo some Volkls this year...so hopefully, I'll be able to speak from experience some time very soon!

I own the Auras and love them and have heard great things about the Phat Luvs too. Both are great pow skis. I've also heard that K2s are a damper ride and Volkls have more pop. Volkls also tend to be more expensive. My recommendation? Demo!

Personally, I love the Auras. I just bought a pair. I've never liked K2, because of how damp they are. Just a personal thing. Poppy poppy poppy!

Threads always get hijacked. Lol.

I'm not sure yet. I want want want Dukes, and if not AT, then REALLY I want Jesters. But I believe I'm going to end up with the Look PX 12 Ti Lifters, because the first two are way too expensive for me right now.

OJ, look at Griffons, They are lighter than the Jesters and a bit cheaper but with the same wide mounting platform.
worth a look for sure

Welcome to Ski Diva.
If you're looking for the new Auras, Skigirl just posted some in Gear swap for a heck of a bargain, still in the wrapper.
you don't have access to that area yet, but you can send her a pm.

The Aura is an amazing ski!

Love, love, love my Auras. Hated the Lotta Luv when I demoed them, but then again, I AM volklgirl . The K2s are just too heavy and damp for my liking.

SH, I'm thinking about remounting my Auras with Griffons (that's why I asked)....

Nobody asked me, but I put Marker 12.0 Free bindings on the Auras and I am putting Griffons on the Lady Harts. If I had access to the Griffons when I was looking to mount the Auras I probably would have gotten them...but the Frees are fine

And I have the Marker Piston Control 11 on mine.

Thank you so much for all of the opinions and info! I took out a pair of the Auras to demo over the weekend, and absolutely LOVED them. I ordered a pair the next day! And thanks to a great tip on the deals forum about getting 20% off at www.o2gearshop.com I got a great deal on them. This website is such a wealth of information!

I have an older pair of Phat Luvs (95 underfoot) and they are surprisingly light compared to my Lottas. I skied them in a few inches of powder and they were great, but have yet to really put them to the test. Since I only paid $200 for them, I still want to demo the Aura in powder this winter and see if I like it significantly more. So many of you seem to love the Aura! :ski2:

I think I can sell the Phat Luvs pretty easily if I decide that the Aura is a required addition to my quiver. The test will be how they perform in a foot or more of Mammoth's "Sierra cement."

Now I've got to demo some Auras

Hi Amanda,

I was going to tell you about my experience demoing the Phat Luvs this week - I loved them - but then I read that you'd fallen for the Auras.

What is it about these skis??? This site is Aura Fan Club Central, and I feel like I'm out of the loop. So I'm going to have to demo the Auras.

For the record, what I loved most about the Phat Luvs is how solid they are in chowder/crud. I felt I could plow through anything without getting bucked around. Is this a positive side effect of the damped nature of K2 skis or something else?

Thanks anyway for sharing your take on the Phat Luvs. I actually didn't get to demo the Phat Luvs. I was looking for a stiffer ski so I went with the Aura. I felt the same way about the Aura as far as blasting through just about any snow condition I encountered on the slope. I also really like that when I was skiing agressively it took very little effort on my part to get a big response from the skis. Mine arrived yesterday and they are all mounted and ready to go:clap: I put Marker MC 11 bindings on them, I really wanted the Marker 12.0 Free but couldn't justify spending the extra money. You should definitely demo the Auras if you get a chance!

 They are just fabulous. Stiff, fat, perrrrty, poppy and awesome.

Volkl should use us as a testimonial on their USA site.

But... Just because we're all smitten with the Aura, doesn't mean you have to be too.
