K2 One Luv Crack

Bravosarah

Ski Diva Extraordinaire
Yesterday, I noticed a crack in front of the toe side of my binding. The crack is neither part of my binding nor my ski, but rather the 'platform' to which the binding is mounted to the ski. (see photo)

My question is, since my skis where bought in September 2007 and K2 has a one year warranty on manufacturers defect. (Which I'm sure it is as I have only skied in these skis) Would you send the skis to the dealer now (ASAP) or ski on them until the season is over.

If I send them in now, which is probably best, I will have no skis!

Sorry to hear that, Bravosarah! I saw the thread title and thought this was gonna be about ski addiction :D

Did you buy them from a local shop?

If you have a good relationship with the shop you bought them from they may 1) give you a loaner pair while they send yours out or 2) make a note of when you brought them in for the warranty then tell you to ski them the rest of the season.

If you bought them on-line or from a store without an established relationship, it's a crap-shoot.

Might as well send 'em/take 'em in - it probably is not particularly safe to use them, as the toe mount is clearly compromised if cracked. Anyone who has had a toe piece rip out (and there are a couple of us here...) can tell you that this is not a nice way to initiate a fall, and often with a lousy outcome.

Did you buy them locally or far away? Either way, don't wait too long - hopefully, as mentioned above, you can get a loaner - or better yet, a full replacement, and let the shop deal with the warranty stuff. That would be a great business move on their part. What kind of bindings are these? That's the culprit - either that or the actual mounting process. Take them in.

Thanks guys,

I bought them locally.

I've decided that I will bring them in Sat morning to show the Service Techs and discuss the best course of action.

I will post what they've said Sat afternoon.

I'm torn on this topic. Half of me is really upset that you have a problem with your ski. Half of me is really happy that you found the problem before a significant breakage and possible injury. The other half of me is thinking.........hey, she skied on these a while. Whoooo hoooo, lets get new skis!!!!

Do I have three halves?:faint:

My first thought, too! I was expecting to read a thread about how she's got this stash of One Luvs that she has to hide from her friends!

"This is pure snow! Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is?"

"Go that way really fast. When something gets in your way, turn!"

One of my all time favorite movies.

OK, I've just returned from the shop. Good news, it's aesthetic only and will be covered under warranty. (yay!) Seeing my scepticism, the Service Tech explained that it is moulded plastic that is made too look like carbon fibre and make the rail appear larger.

He then showed me the 2008’s. (Mine is a 2007 model) The ‘08 One Luv did away with the piece altogether and the ’08 Lotta Luv has a revised piece, it is now shorter to make it stronger and cream coloured. He also said that that will be the piece I will get when they replace the cracked one. I am not the first ’07 One Luv brought back to the shop. He did up a service invoice slip with today’s date and gave me a copy to bring in when the season is over. He also gave me the option of leaving my skis now and getting them back in two weeks. But since they don’t have demos anymore, I’ll bring them in when the season is over.

Then I proceeded to spend $50 worth of stuff I don’t really need.

Exceptional service, I didn't mention the fact that he phoned their other three shops looking for demos AND when he gave me my skis back he put ski straps on them! Considering this was also a very busy Saturday afternoon I was very impressed at this young man.

Sounds like you bought those from a great shop that knows the meaning of customer service. Now another important question- what else did you buy? Isn't it funny how that works.
