Ski Diva Extraordinaire
K2 Obsethed, 169 cm, 2 feet of Pow. Highlands & Snowmass.
Ok so it doesn't hurt that mother nature flew off the handle and just DUMPED on us. What a great weekend to try my new skis!!!
Day 1, Highlands opening day. 8:45 chair. Dumping outside, cold, cloudy. The first thing I noticed was how much lighter the K2's were than my Volkl Mantras. I didn't notice carrying them, but when on my feet - it was like night & day. I was also a bit concerned that I should have gone with the 179's. But then, I took my first run and the doubt flew out the window.
First tracks everywhere. Waist deep powder. The Obsethed's made floating above, over and through this heavy dumping with ease. Just point and go. Very responsive ski. And in the areas where things started to get tracked out - it just plowed through the uneven stuff like nothing.
I don't know if this is an actual term, but they are very "hoppy" skis. Jumping and playing and poofing from tuft of snow to another was simple. And the stiffness of the Obsethed is like Goldilocks and the 3 Bears....juuuust right. The mix of lightness and stiffness is definitely a winning combination. And the length is perfect. I think one size up would be just too monstrous to handle. In the trees and in some of the tighter areas I ski - I think I made a great choice.
This was the first day on these skis and the first day skiing with my boyfriend. To quote him: "Dude you were totally slaying $$*t today!"
Then last night he said: "It's not like you're just good for a girl, you're like...actually really good!" It was really great to hear because he's a great skier.
Day 2, Snowmass. FREEZING. Yup, still dumping. So today I was reminded why Snowmass is coined "Slowmass" on a pow day. I should have gone back to Highlands. Mother nature dropped ANOTHER 14 or so inches overnight. Not too much steep & deep to be found, so I just trucked around solo all day with my new Obsetheds. Snowmass Patrol can't open terrain fast enough!!
Surprise:On the little terrain that had been groomed, these babies hold their own. They're only a slightly rockered design, so the edge grip isn't totally lost on the hard pack. Granted, this ski would not be a wise choice on the East Coast without fresh snow, but the skis performance led me to wonder if it would soon become my "everyday ski."
There were areas of groomed with about 4 inches of pow on top, with the sides of the trails about 2 feet deep of pow. I could transition from the mid trail to the sides and not even have the concern of sinking a tip. The tips of the skis are 138 (105 underfoot) so the float factor is simply off the hook!
Oh!! And what I had been missing sooo much....the TWIN TIPS baby!! Love the switch riding ability, it totally helps in tight chutes and trees.
In summary: The K2 Obsetheds are a great ski and lots of fun. I strongly suggest you divas out there take a demo if you've got a nice big powder/big mountain day ahead of you. They'll take you where you need to go and back again. The graphics on these skis are awesome. It's like a mountain monster guy getting attacked by K2 Helicopters and snowmobiles. Pretty cool stuff, hats off to K2 on that.
With 14-18" forecasted by Wednesday morning - looks like I'll be taking the big girls out muuucch more often!!
