It's Amazing

What a difference a couple of inches of snow can make!

DH was talking to his dad tonight -- he told dad that "she kept up with me all day" on Thursday. He knows full well that HE kept up with me -- I owned that mountain on Thursday! I'm not sure what was special about it. Weather was good, snow was packed/groomed, but mostly, somehow, I was just ON -- steeps even! and FAST! I surprised, shocked, and delighted myself. I tried a couple of new black runs that I'd never skied before, and even rocked on those! We pretty much breezed through 20-some runs, most of them in the neighborhood of 2000 vertical.

Today was sure different.

About two inches fell over night "officially." It's kind of warm, so it was pretty heavy snow, not the mostly dry stuff we've had much of the winter, but not exactly "wet" either. We had some fog -- a few areas were pretty much white out much of today.

Now I'm not going to say I skied badly. All in all, I feel pretty good about the day. It sure was more WORK though! Again, there was a new black run to try. One of my new runs from Thursday again too.

The thick, pushed around "powder" on top of the packed stuff makes a big challenge for me and my K2 True Luvs. They really do prefer groomed runs, and toss me around a lot on snow like we skied today. It was not a fast, fly from top to bottom kind of day for me like Thursday was. (DH sure liked that) Lots of riding my turns too far while recovering my balance, and lots of stopping to catch my breath after some of the more startling moments as the mountain fought back today.

So, DH wanted to take me on one of his favorite runs -- he's kept me off it before now -- and I said, okay, I'd try it, but it's going to take a while, so is he patient enough today for that? This other guy on the lift with us said, but that run you just came off of is much steeper -- you can do it!

He wasn't, not really. I'd catch up to where he stopped as he was leading me through this "uncharted" territory, and he'd take off. I needed the stop to look over what was coming up, and then he'd grumble. It's a fun run, and I'm looking forward to playing on that one again -- we did it three or four times today.

Today was hard work -- my body was more tired from Thursday than I realized, the snow was more challenging, and DH seemed to think I needed coaching. It was hard to get through to him that I knew what I needed to do, and how to do it, and that I was, actually, doing it. Just had this situation of the wrong ski for the day. (on the other hand, everyone and his brother was skiing on his skis today!)

Al in all, while I did not ski with the same speed and "style" that was there on Thursday, I also still skied like never before -- blacks where greens were available, up in the clouds instead of staying down on the front side where the visibility was much better, and in the mushy pushed around stuff instead of the much more easily navigated clean and smooth runs.

He probably doesn't think so, but hard as it was, and difficult as I was to ski with, I had a great day!

Kano we got seven inches last night and 4 on friday night over here in Ketchum. It was not exactly "light and fluffy" but it didn't suck either. It was more character building. My 12 yr old niece was struggling in it. It got a little tossy in the bowls later in the day. But she toughed it out and I'm very proud of her for that! Conditions had definitly changed for her from one day to the next, I think it's tougher on the kids because they don't have the weight to drive through it. Still it was better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

You know, I opened this thread thinking you were talking about it in the opposite direction, and I was going to totally agree. I guess it depends on how the snow you usually ski is. I haven't had much experience with snow that fell from the sky, but when I've gotten a few inches on top, I've found it to make skiing much more enjoyable.

Glad you had an "on" day Thursday, and had a great time the next time out despite the challenges. That's how you know it's love, when you bust your butt with a smile on your face :D

Ah, it is always so amazing when things fall into place! Glad you had a good day on Thursday!

However, I think the bolded part says it all... even though you don't feel you skied as good as you did on Thursday!

YAY for you!!

Perma-grin -- Character Building. I like that description of the snow that seems to have fallen all over the southern Idaho mountains the other night!

I did look at DH when we got home and said, "y'know? It's just as well Mark wimped out this morning. He wouldn't have liked today's conditions anyway."

And Num, I agree -- new snow is always fun, but it can be a whole lot more work than "clean," packed, groomed snow. At the time, it was kind of frustrating to struggle with things that were such a breeze three days earlier. I had to keep reminding myself that I was doing just fine, considering the difference in the conditions. DH doesn't like waiting for me -- he really likes speed, and my slow days make him annoying to ski with. STill, all frustration aside, if I'd gone with my usual routine on the challenging days, I wouldn't have attempted the runs I did -- and it could be a whole lot longer til I got around to them!

And Sheena, I agree -- frustrated as I was at times, it really wasn't that I skied badly, and it wasn't that I didn't have a great time, I think it was comparing the way I skied on Thursday, flying all over the mountain, with the slower, more character-building sort of skiing that I was doing on Sunday!

AND, DH was ready to go home first!
