ISO New Skis

Hi Divas!

I haven't posted here in forever, but here I am 15 years later still loving our sport and looking to replace my very old Volkl Lunas. I live in PA, but do ski at least 10-15 days on big mountains. Can't afford a quiver - so want a decent all mountain ski that can still handle groomers, the dreaded ice, crud, small bumps and the occasional semi-powder day when lucky. I'd say I'm a typical level 7 intermediate blue/easy black kinda skier. Speed is not the goal, as I prefer the "fun" terrain, but would like to limit squirley skis and chatter if possible. I've had some amazing days with instructors who have taken me into trees and some cool spots I would otherwise not attempt on my own, but I aspire to be able to ski more places like this with confidence. Been doing crossfit for last 14 years and super fit, but I'm not doing the terrain park or anything like that in my future. I can make a ski work hard when the terrain requires it, but want to be able to do lazy chill runs also. I realize I may not check off all boxes. I am realistic.

My demo experience rather limited. I did a 5 day clinic in France last year and skied Atomic Mavens the entire time which were great for speed, but didn't feel like they were playful enough. I demoed Black Pearl 88's for a few days in Banff and Lake Louise which I liked, but still not sure they were the ski for me. Then swapped out the BP for Total Joy's and immediately wished I kept the Black Pearls so that was a hard NO!

I called around in my area, but there is nothing here available to demo. My next opportunity to try any of the performance skis on my list will be in Whistler, I do have another trip to Tahoe, but didn't research available demo options yet.

New boots are also happening. I'm lucky enough to have one of the best kept secrets in boot fitting in my general area.

I'm 55 years old, 5'6" and average 130-135. This is my short list and all but the Ripstick's are available to demo in Whistler. As for size, most of these all around 88/163.

Black Pearl - I want to get back on these to see since its been awhile.
Volkl Kenja or Secret - A few shops I've talked to have suggested these.
Santa Anas were on my list, but a few shops thought it was too heavy for me
Elan Ripstiks - Seems like a fun ski I should at least try if I can find it

Looking forward to your input!

Oh my goodness, I can't believe you still had Lunas. Those were my second pair of skis I ever owned forever ago. Sounds like you're not looking to stay in skinny skis like the Luna? If I remember correctly they were 72 at the waist??

What part of PA are you in? Blue Mountain has a demo selection in their shop. For a flat rate you can try 3 skis, or was the issue they're all too short?

@tinymoose! How are you? If I recall we learned around the same time. And Yes, believe it or not, I still have those Lunas. Learned to tune, ptex and wax myself so generally took great care of them. A few years of no skiing as a few life things happened and then covid. As for Blue, I believe they only had 1 to try and couldn't guarantee what would be available. I have an Epic Pass this year, so didn't want to buy an unnecessary lift ticket and not get to demo what want. Def think I should step up from the 72, but no higher than 88.

The Kenja is now the Secret 88. There is also the Secret 84. I have not tried either, but wanted to flag the name change.
Thank you for clarifying. I saw some reviews and was a bit confusing. Most of the new reviews are on the Secret 96's - look like they got the latest redesign. That's too much ski for me.

The "Kenja" will probably be cheaper if you don't want the newest model - and the 23/24/25 (I think the same ski with different topsheet?) is pretty accessible

The Black Pearl has been updated and it's everything you describe that you want. They added titanal (metal) in "strips" which is something I have wanted to have in the BP since the beginning. It is like having power steering, it will do whatever turn shape you want, it is planted and quiet yet full of energy. It has fantastic edge hold, is calm in the "death cookies" but handles chop and powder effortlessly.

There is an 84 waist width that might fit your needs perfectly. I will say the 88 is incredibly versatile, though. Definitely get on the latest iteration because it skis vastly different from the previous version.

I agree with @contesstant that you might like the new BP 88 with the added metal. The Secret 88/Kenja is unchanged this year, aside from the name so good deals might be out there.

I don’t agree with shops that the Santa Ana 87 would be too heavy, it’s actually one I encourage everyone to try if they’re looking for a playful but stable ski in that width. And, since you didn’t like the Joy skis, I’d assume you don’t enjoy the lighter end of skis. It’s going to be a big change from your Volkl’s because of the tip and tail rocker but might be a change you enjoy!

I am about the same size as you are with similar terrain preferences, though I am based in CA. I replaced my Völkl AC2s (slightly stiffer than the Lunas?) with the Secret 92s a few years ago. I absolutely love the Secret 92s! They have been phased out, but there might be good deals on stray leftover stock?

At the time, I demoed a few different skis and here are my notes: https://www.theskidiva.com/forums/i...ement-for-volkl-attiva-ac2s.25389/post-429379.

I have also skied my brother’s Ripstick 96s and found them zippy and fun even in a longer 167cm length.

If you’re a car girl at all, the titanal frame skis (Volkls + new BPs) drive like a BMW 3 while the Ripsticks drive like a Subaru BRZ
