Is there any reason why you can't . . .

ski in your backyard?

I officially said good-bye to skiing yesterday. I mean, we can't keep our gear bag on the kitchen table forever, can we?

We have 5 to 10 inches of beautiful new snow in New Hampshire. So what's preventing me from skiing in my hilly back yard?

Or even better, I live across from a very hilly golf course. Would it wreck the greens if . . . ?

Why not?

Snowglider, if we've told you once, we've told you a hundred times -
GO FOR IT!!!! Just let us know how it goes! PS- Yes you might wreck the greens, just be prepared with a good alibi and alias in case they catch you.....

HA HA!

You're funny, Gloria. I was just joking around because I want this forum to stay alive during the off season.

But you make a good point---it seems like I'm waiting for someone to give me permission to go have fun. I will ruminate on that.

I have downhill skied in my parents' backyard when I was 11 or so. I just kept walking up and skiing down until I got bored (about 4 times, I think).

I know lots of folks who x-country ski on golf courses, too....

.

You see 4 times 11 equals 44, and 40 is the new 50, so see Snowglider, you are almost as young in age as you are at heart, just remember age is all relative, and you will have as much fun as your heart is telling you. But like I said, do tell us your adventures. And photos dear, send photos.;)

New math, eh?

Don't you mean "50 is the new 40"? I know what you mean.

Here is why I first learned to ski: When I was 49 I went to a sports store to buy some ice skates (hockey, of course, not little-gurly figure skates). The owner of the store was 73 but looked 20 years younger. He asked me my age. When I told him 49 he said, "You look 35 and you should live your life as if you're 35."

That statement totally changed my life! I said to myself, "Well, if I'm only 35 I'm young enough to learn to ski after all." I signed up for a skiing lesson and fell in love with skiing immediately, as I knew I would. I bought the skates, but I never even wore them. At the end of the ski season I went back to thank the owner of the store for helping me see the light about age.

Skiing midweek I meet many skiers in their 70s and 80s. They're the most upbeat group of people you'll ever meet.

I can't post photos. I hate technology. I'm terrible with it. I function better in the natural world.

Ski season is over for me. Time to wash down the bike, polish the hiking boots, and clean the spiders out of the kayak.

my local ski hill is home to some of the most hardcore skiers i've ever met.

there are a few groups in their 60's . . . one of these groups skies the in the backcountry all day. and most of them ski EVERYDAY, no matter what! they shuttle their vehicles to ski runs off of the hill to the road -- all day. their legs must be made of steel!!! :D

one group is in their 70's and 80's . . . the area where they like to ski is considered a very big secret stash (known only to them and a select few who've they've taken there) and is known by the locals affectionately as the "old timer lines".

these people are my personal heros!!!!

ps my local ski hill also sells t-shirts that say "old timers rule!"
because they do!!! :D

skiing today!

Well, my husband and I did a spur of the moment (okay we decided last night) trip to Sunapee today since they got 8 new inches the other day. It was remarkable good for April 14th. I certainly did not think there were anymore ski runs left for me in this season. It was fun!!!!! They are talking about snow or rain Sunday / Monday....if it snows there, I may just have to sneak in another day this coming week! Our 17 yr. old daughter (the baby) is in Denmark on a school exchange student trip until Friday, so we have the house to ourselves for 10 days (a first in 20 years). Kinda weird, but I can't say I don't like it at all. Miss her, but wow, time seems so much more spread out............hope everyone gets anther ski run or two in if they can. ;)))
