Is Fat Where It's At?

Fat-waisted skis seem to be the latest and the greatest, at least according to Ski Magazine. Most of the skis reviewed had waists over 80mm. Is it just a marketing ploy or are there some real benefits here?

Hey Ski Diva!
I wish I was up to date on the lastest skis. Maybe being active in this forum will force me to.

Some of the benefits of an fat ski well the obvios more float in powder, maybe could be more of an all-mountian ski as well.I find them slow turning-but this is more likely my ski style that makes me think this.

Wouldn't mind trying out a fattie in some deep pow though-do we get that in VT??

Once in a while, once in a while. And sometimes they get ice out west, too (don't let 'em tell you otherwise!).

I don't know a lot about fat skis, either. I always thought the general rule was that a thinner waist was better for hard pack. However, I've heard some people say fat skis are easier to ski on. I'd love to hear from someone who knows something about this.

It is not necessary to have a fat ski in Michigan. More of an all mountain, or carving world here.
But......I like to play with 'different stuff', so why not try some fatter skis(A girls gotta be prepared for a trip out west, right?)
Since my main ski now is a Metron B5, I've begun the path to a fat ski, though the waist is still narrow.

The fattest ski I've skied (considering waist) is the Volkl AC4, 125/82/110.
The AC4 was surprisingly fun on the groomers. I couldn't wipe the big Grin off my face.

So an opportunity arose for me to pick up a pair of Atomic Teledaddy's for 159.00, (121/99/113) I only hesitated briefly. The width isn't something I will embrace on my home mountain(or maybe I will:rolleyes: ), but I think they will be a blast when I take my trip out west.
The teledaddy's are the same dimension as the sugar daddy's but the TD's are slightly softer.

I ski the K2 Lotta Luv most regularly, which has a 78mm waist. That's pretty fat, at least compared to the old days, and is ample flotation in most (at least to knee-to-thigh-deep) conditions for a gal my size. That said, on deeper days I am a big fan of the Phat Luv, which is truly fat for females, at a 95mm girth. Good times to be had in the deeper stuff, and I found them to have a surprisingly good grip on frontside hardpack and good manueverability in tight spots.

BUT, I ski in CO and occasionally in CA and Canada and usually in back bowls type (in-resort, but not too maintained) conditions, not too many groomers and not a lot of ice. So I think I am definitely in the mid-fat --> really-fat market sweet spot.

I cut my teeth skiing in Michigan and on the ice coast, and I am not sure I would pick these skis out there. I skied one of the Rossi Oversize Models on a firm, frontside day last winter, and I think a recreational race ski or something more like this would be a lot more fun in someplace where I was dealing with more compressed snow on a daily basis. Ah, how I remember a few days at Loon where you could actually see the grass through the layer of blue ice covering the hill. Sharp skis with a skinny waist were called for. Or maybe just a hot chocolate in the lodge. You east coast ladies could show me up on the blue ice these days, I think!

Mollmeister, don't be surprised if I PM you when I visit my sister in law on Golden Co next spring.

I'll bring my Michigan skills and hope for the best.

Maybe she'll become a skidiva too?
