Insulated miniskirts? Is there any sense in that?

@KWlovessnow thanks for the blister review link - who would have thought they would have done a review on skirts ;0

@laine Im a 4 or 6 or sometimes 2? Im not a jeans person?

I will post a bit more on the skirt tomorrow when I have time, yes for XC ski I want thinner packable easy removable wind block for over leggings that can handle snow/ wet/. I find I can get away without a layer with my current cheap skirt just can't hit my full stride in it. Spring skiing for sure over leggings, especial for protection on lift. I have spring toured in a pair of boy cut short asic running shorts. This would have been a nice cover up for that situation. This skirt more on the active side than the cute warm down side.

So the La Sportiva Chrysalis primaloft Skirt in small came today, and I'm keeping it.
I am kind of between sizes, as the Medium could work over insulated ski pants, but I want this for when I'm just wearing a layer or two of thinner leggings. Fit is better in the small, exactly like image.

Think of this skirt as the "patagonia houdini" version of a down skirt. Its not meant to be a true insulation layer, more of a windstop with a bit of insulation. It has a great elastic waist and it is thin, the primaloft is in-between the quilting. I think it will be perfect for both XC, spring tour and colder hikes as a windstop extra layer that is very light and packable. I do have to have the bottom of the zipper up a bit in order to get my full stride, but thats easy compared to current skirt without a zipper.

I love my mtn hardware insulated skirt, especially living in the mountains. I wear mine more to the office and out and about than after skiing. I find it's super cute with fleece lined tights, a cozy sweater and boots. I am so comfortable at the office and warm. I run super cold.

I always think they are super cute, but I doubt that I would ever wear one. I'm quite comfortable in my ski pants until I get home and then I'm into a pair of jeans.

I had an insulated maxi skirt. I found it in a thrift shop and jumped on the bargain.

I would wear it when I was making a long drive to ski if I planned on going straight to the mountain. I'd typically wear my liners in the car but not my ski pants on top of them. That would be too hot a combo in the car. But I never liked taking a bio break at a convenience store/gas station wearing liners without pants over them, so I wore the skirt over them for the ride. This was a practical choice, not a fashion choice.

However, the skirt (by Schoop, so it was high quality) was made of nylon plus the insulation material (could have been down, don't remember). The nylon would slide around my waist so the skirt would always end up facing sideways. That was annoying. I ended up giving it away.

I don't wear mini skirts and haven't since the 1960s. So a mini would not serve any purpose for me. Today I'd just wear the liners with ski pants over them. No big deal, since I won't be driving 2+ hours to ski in frigid New England weather any more.

In response to the title of this thread….there’s no sense to much of what we do in skiing! But we do it anyway, ha ha.
I have yet to buy an insulated mini, but now that I wear shell bibs over various base layers I can see the value for a quick easy coverup for apres, driving, shopping etc.

I like the insulated/quilted mini skirt look but it is not for short & curvy me. My picks for quick cover up of base layers for apres, driving, shopping, etc. would be a long tunic that covers front & back, or sweatpants.

I’d trip on a tunic. Fleecy sweats can be hard to pull up…I have nylon-y ones. I can see the wrap appeal of the mini and you can leave whatever boots on.

I have a few quilted skirts. The one I posted above is the shortest one and the others are a few inches longer (still short). I wear with wool tights and boots for apres ski drinks, etc as well as dinner parties or even out to dinner. Those who have skied with me or done apres or dinner will have seen me wearing one!

Ooooh me thinks I might like one now !
The lodge we go to for Apre has a really bad extraction fan system so my clothes always have that horrible cooking smell after I've been there ... which is often ! One of these would be so simple just to chuck on over my base layers and save my ski pants from the dreaded stench.
And they're super cute as well

I can see a use case for wet days driving home, where I can't wear my wet outer layers in the car but it's a bit cold and we might want to stop somewhere on the way home. Base layers don't always cut it on my lower half!

I own a down Smartwool skirt. I admittedly normally leave my ski pants on or go full baselayer leggings post skiing depending on the condition/cuteness of my leggings. But it's cute and fun to wear here and there.

@liquidfeet - you're in DC now?!?! am I reading that right ? If so, can I ever talk you up for a Montage Sunday? You get me, @yogiskier, @Olesya Chornoguz !

Just checked. Montage is a four hour drive from my place in DC. Unfortunately that's too far for a day trip for me.

I still want one but haven't found the right deal yet. I do have a Smartwool wool skirt that's a nice cover up and I wear it workng from home a lot in the winter. We keep the thermostat so low I like layers over my leggings and am usually working in a puffy jacket or have a blanket over my shoulders.
To update... I found one at a secondhand shop and finally have my puffy skirt and adore it. It's more flattering than I expected, since I have big hips anyway, and super comfy over leggings. I wear it working from home, dog walking, anything where I'll be sitting on a cold surface. Way more practical, and gets more use than I had initially imagined.

The one I have is reversible. So one side is all black, the other has red stripes on the sides. I like it with insulated leggings for a little more "dressed up" look.

For me, a quilted or down mini skirt doesn't make a ton of sense. I've owned a Skhoop down maxi skirt for probably a decade now, and it proved to be most useful during the season right after the pandemic when all of my socializing was outdoors. It's since gotten a little tight, and I'm more inclined to get down pants than another down skirt for what that's worth!
