Diva in Training
Hi - I'm totally new to Ski Diva, but not new to skiing. I started when I was 5, (Belleayre Mtn, NY) and skied religiously, every winter weekend until my teens, when I got...distracted.

I suppose income, or lack there of kept me from the slopes until well after college, and then more distraction from work, married life, having a partner who doesn't ski (and has no interest whatsoever in learning,) have STILL kept me from the slopes, even though I now live in Maine and am a stone's throw from some great East Coast skiing.

Today on a whim, I noticed a local (Rodgers) shop with a HUGE sale, and well, I decided that this was the year that I ski again. The owner of the store seemed to know his stuff really well, took a lot of time with me, and really listened to the kind of skier I was/am and would like to be. And because it was last years stuff I got everything 50% off the last sale price - so a complete set up for less than $600.

I ended up getting a pair of Elan Black Magic ski's, Elan bindings, and Atomic B70 boots. I usually don't buy stuff on a whim, especially stuff I haven't researched, but I was in a weird mood, and the staff there was SO good - I couldn't resist.

My preliminary research shows that these ski's are pretty well liked - but what do you think???

Also, any New Englanders/Mainers out there who can suggest which "local" mountains are a good place for me to start? I was thinking Saddleback or Sunday River, but I'd love to hear other suggestions!

Thanks, and I look forward to some great conversation here, as well as a stellar ski season!

Welcome!

I don't have any experience with the Elan Black Magics, but I hear they're good skis. You'll have to let us know how you like them, once you try them out.

Congratulations on your new purchase, and on getting back into skiing!

Welcome. I love the black magics. Great ice hold. You may need a little instruction with the more shapely skis if you have been out skiing for a while. The change in movement patterns require a little bit of adjustment time. But if you are at all aggressive the Black magics will be a nice choice for you. More importantly having your own new equipement will make you more likely to get out and ski!:ski2:

I agree with perma-grin. Try to join a ladies group lesson for starts. You are going to love the Black Magics. And Atomic makes a great boot. I'm not sure but check and see if there are electrical wires coming out of your boot. If so, then you can add a battery pack and have warm toasty toes too. One of the nice features of Atomic.
Great to have you on the board and back to skiing.

Welcome to the forum, from a fellow "Mainuh!"

From SkiPressWorld, here's some info on your skis:

Agree with above posts that you will probably need some technique updating, as modern skis perform somewhat differently.

You've got the "Big Four" to choose from: Shawnee Peak (close, night skiing), Sunday River, Saddleback & Sugarloaf (good grief, ALL start with S!).

Saddleback is a great place to get your legs back - lovely easier green terrain, good service (a valet actually takes skis off your CAR!!), less crowding. Once you're back "in the groove," come on up to Sugarloaf! (my home mountain) Best aspect is their treatment of day skiers: great shuttle service (constant) from day parking lots to base, never a problem leaving a boot bag in lodge, lots of good blue terrain. Sunday River probably has more blue stuff, but their day parking situation is less accommodating, and the crowds can be substantial.

Hope to meet you sometime! :D
