OK...so I just had the most AMAZING ski day EVER!!! I decided to sign up for adult lessons that are 8 weeks in length. It was only $150, and you get a whole two sessions of 1.5 hours each Saturday (THREE hours!!!)! My instructor is killer and I have improved so much just today! I can't wait for the weeks to come!

Now the kicker...I decided to go for the harness for my 3 1/2 year old, and took her down a green run so she could try out the chair lift! We did pretty good and my daughter is now addicted!! She didn't want to leave! I knew if I could just get her on the chair she'd love it! Although I only did the one run with her since she used to tire after only 20-30 mins in her lessons. So we're going to go up tomorrow again to try some more! Who could ask for a better day???

Reading your post put a big smile on my face and gave me memories of me skiing with my niece! I'm glad you had such a great day!

Awesome!

I am hoping to take some lessons this year as well. They have Woman Wednesdays up at my local resort. $40 per lesson, and that includes breakfast and then 3 hour lesson.

Glad to hear your daughter is loving it too!

No, I tried giving her two private lessons already this year (well, two paid...one for free) and she only lasted about 20-30 mins each time. So it was not a good use of $40. She would rather be in the babysitters.

Kinda wishing I had put her in the season long lessons now. Is she too young for that do you thinK?

What is the start date for season long there? I'm thinking that with her breakthrough with you  why not stick, perhaps, with what's working this season and go for the season-long next year? She'd be 4+ by then, possibly more aware of her peers, etc. - thus more ready, willing and able to part with you, be with them and follow an instructor/coach with the group. Just a thought. Sometimes it's easier to take these things one step at a time. My son was super-shy (still is) and not ready for the group seasonal stuff until age 5.

So glad she is "off and running!" (oops, I mean SKIING  )

Be sure you get her out of the harness ASAP--all the parents and coaches I've talked to about them say the kids get too used to them and should come out after only 2 - 3 days. Good for you, though, glad the addictive personality runs in the family1

Actually, today I took her out on two runs (seperately, because I didn't want her to tire) and because we took the harness off for the chair, i thought...why not let her try the bunny hill w/o it. She loved it, although we didn't have edgie wedgies today so it was harder for her to snowplow on command... She then wanted to go down the big hill w/o the harness. I think next step is no harness, but back with edgie wedgies.

MSL...that's a good point. I dont want to rush things (even though that's my own personal style) ;)

I kept my daughter in a harness for HER OWN PROTECTION for two years, which is around 30 days. She just didn't have the sense on the crowded runs at Camelback to watch out for other skiers. She had to learn to glance up hill before sudden changes of direction, be able to stop with a turn uphill, a snow plow and a DROP WHEN MOM SCREAMS before she was allowed off leash. On a crowded hill, the ability to slightly hold her back to avoid another skier or whatever is crucial.

After she was off leash, I still played linebaker (right term? I don't know a thing about football..) by skiing behind her in a snowplow with my elbows and poles sticking out to act as a screen for any slams from behind until her weight level was such as could take a hit.

We never used the things that hold your toes together or the kind of harness that you could TURN her from the hips, it was just a leash. It helped when dragging her across the flats as well, I'd just toss it between her legs and drag her if we were in the base area.

So what age did you take her off the leash Sibhusky? My DD already wants to try the green run without it but that is not going to happen! lol I just got an edgie wedgie too because we've been borrowing one from the ski school (which they are now low on because ppl are taking them).

I think she may have been 4 or 5. Can't remember, she's 20 now. I think I may have carried the leash "just in case" on some harder trails or more crowded runs for a while as well. I'll ask her about this. Her memory of these things is better than mine.
