I tried skiing powder again today....

With the huge storm that came through, I could not pass up an opportunity to practice skiing powder even more. We got a late start, but even though we got there at 10:30, we skied untracked powder until 1:30 - and there was still plenty more to be had.

wow! did I really do that?!

I am still learning, and had some good turns. Here is a picture of my best:

Here is a shot of a not so good turn... I still have a tendency to get a little nervous and take a really wide stance.

Looking good, Sheena!

I always love looking back at my tracks in the snow.

Sheena -- that wide stance thing happens to me too when the spookies hit me. I've decided it's an "Idaho stance." Makes me giggle, and that relaxes me, at least for a few seconds!

You and your trails look fantastic! Snow is falling here tonight, I'll have to see if I can find any of that fresh, untracked stuff and see what sort of damage I can do to it in the morning!

All I can say is it's a GOOD thing there weren't cameras pointing at ME in the powder today!

Well, no, that's not all....

Bogus had about seven inches overnight, and it was nice snow, just the thing I was looking forward to playing in. I knew it was going to be a bit of a battle for me, mentally and physically, but the mountain threw in one more thing for good measure! Clouds clung to the mountain, and I could't see where I was going. Nothing throws me off like that does.

A nicely packed, windy, seriously shrouded cat track along the summit sent me suddenly airborne when I found "invisible" bumps on it. A couple of snowboarders must have seen those bumps, somehow, and cris-crossed around me way too close for comfort when I was in panic-mode. The bumps on the cat track changed my mind about skiing the back side of the mountain, since sooner or later I would have to go back and face those obstacles again, and what they did to my head, there just weren't any runs back there that would be worth THAT!

Back on the front side, (via still more cat track) the powder was rapidly getting pushed around, and visibility was still rotten, so it was hard to see the fluffy piles I kept running into.

Poor DH found me in the middle of one run, and made the mistake of asking if I was okay. At that moment, nope, frustration had the better of me, and the poor guy.... He suggested we leave. I said, no, I get to be frustrated and struggle some. It must be a new thing for me -- seems like after all these years he'd understand that it's not necessarily a bad thing when I start getting cranky! (sometimes, he should just feed me)

On the whole, I don't think my little K2 True Luvs liked the snow today. We argued a lot today. They were much happier on Tuesday, when the snow was crisp and groomed!

The clouds did lift some, and there were a couple of okay runs -- one was going pretty well until my skis and I attempted some more powder, and then it ALL went out the window again!

(I'll let them come along to Grand Targhee in a couple of weeks, and we'll play a lot, I'm sure, but I think I need to demo some skis while there, and see what happens on something that might be more powder oriented! I think I might also see about a powder lesson while we're there!)

Ah, Kano, I have had days like that. I just keep taking things one step at a time, at least I try to. I keep telling myself that I have to take it at my pace... which is hard when everyone I ski with is a much better skier than I am.

The only time I was the first skier down the hill was when I took a lesson at Alta last year. All the women in my group kept telling me what a good skier I was and how they were holding me back in the lesson. -- funny stuff.

You know, Sheena, rough as the day was and beat up as I felt on the way back to the car, I honestly can't say that I didn't enjoy it!

Even the drive up -- oh man, the road was nasty! -- was fun! (at least for me. DH was driving)

Now, what was interesting was that there were a couple of times, once out of the cloud (either below it or when it lifted), and into some relatively "clean" powder rather than the really messed up stuff, things went very well. So I kind of figure that I CAN do it, just that visibillity thing . . .

I WILL get the hang of this powder stuff!

Looks great! We got some powder in Sweden as well this weekend. Actually the weahter was really nasty and then, yesterday, the wind took some time out and we had about 20-30 cm of pow. SWEEEEEET!

Oh my goodness! There's like 9 inches of fresh snow on Bogus this morning! I don't have to work, and I'm SO tempted! We need new tires on Durango, gotta get new ones before I'm driving myself up there!

Hmmm, Costco, here I come! (tires are on sale starting today!)

Kano - who needs LOTS of new powder snow practice!

It can be frustrating, but consistently skiing with people that are better than you will make your learning curve so much shorter! A couple of years chasing friends around Alta did wonders for my skiing in college.

The Beav's looking good, eh? I've never skied up there, but I heard it's fantastic - not a lot of crowds and lots of good snow.

You got that right! it's pretty challenging to be following folks who can do it already while we're learning! I think getting to a place where we can accept that some things just take some time and that if we stick to it, eventually it will come together for us is a good thing.

A little frustration now and then really IS good for us, even though it makes us hard to live with for a while! Yesterday, skiing with DH wasn't a good thing -- when he came around, he'd catch heck for something or other (mostly "personal space violations" and you'd think he'd KNOW by now that it's not a good thing to ski too close to me!) And of course, when I knew he was in the vicinity, I had my worst runs -- at LEAST he's learned that he's not the one to be offering me skiing tips!

Today's really not a good day to go skiing, even though there's a new batch of powder again this morning, but I should plan now to next POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY, go up and take a lesson!

(and find some more powder-friendly skis to demo!)

You look great out there! I myself and tackling the art of powder skiing. And I have found that you're not really as bad as you think you are. The snow looks awesome. Can't wait for my trip to your neighborhood! A group of us are coming down Feb 16-24. I have a feeling I'm going to get lots of practice! :yahoo:
