I need help choosing skis!

I'm looking for some good all-mountain skis to use in the Tahoe area (lots of heavy, wet powder, a few hardpack days). I've been demoing skis, but am just getting confused about what to choose! I ski single blacks, like to go fast on the groomers, but want something that can handle the trees. I really liked the dampness of the Rossignol B94's but am worried about how they'd do on hardpack. I've also liked the Volkl Auras, Salomon Jade, and K2 Tough Luv. The problems are that I've tried them in different conditions, and that I'm not educated enough about it to know what to look for when I demo. I only ski about 15 days/year, and don't want to spend too much more time on it! Any advice?

From a personal Standpoint, I think the Aura will be a better choice in your area. Think snow and let us know how the Aura Treats you!!!

Welcome!

I liked the K2 Tough Luvs in trees and they did very well on groomed when I tried them.

Thanks for the advice! I'm thrilled to have found this site- I'm learning a lot from it. I went ahead and ordered the Auras, and will let you know after I take them out!

Marta -- would you consider the Tough Luv for an "everyday" ski? Some days are groomer days, you know, and some days are all over the place kind of days! I'm wondering if they're a good one to add to my list of things to try.

You should try them. I found them pretty interesting. My general impression is that they felt like they were the big fat sister of my Burnin Luvs. When I had them on the groomers they held an edge that felt very similar to the Burnin's, just w/a longer turn radius. I liked them in soft moguls, and I had them in some pretty tight trees. Great on crud, I was able to arc huge turns and just plow my way thru the chop as if on waterskis. I found myself skiing the fringes of trails searching for something to blast through. So an "all over the place sort of ski" seems to describe this ski well. My only gripe is that I found them slightly heavy the first day, but the 2nd day they felt much better. But in comparison my Burnin's are ultralight because I bought them flat without the marker bindings, it's too bad you can't do that for this ski. You only can get the system setup. A big plus for short girls like me, they come in a 146, rare for midfat to fat skis.

p.s. Check it out, when you switch skis to either foot, the pattern still lines up...:p
