I got tunes!!!!

Never thought I'd do this. I'm one of those people who can't stand being bombarded with sound all the time. But last week my husband -- who LOVES music of all types -- got himself a Giro Fuse helmet with ear pieces wired for sound (dloveski talked about it when we met her in Utah, and he just HAD to have it himself). Well, he said it absolutely transformed his skiing. Said it calms him down and makes him less anxious (he's a fine skier; don't know where this anxiety comes from). Anyway, he raved so about it that I just had to give it a shot. So I bought some ear pieces for my Boeri Tactic helmet, along with an iPod Shuffle (didn't have one, and the price has really come down).

So far I've tried it out twice. The first day it was so icy that the sound of my skis scraping on the snow drowned out the music, unless I had the volume turned waaaay up high . The second day was better. The snow was softer, and I could hear the music over my skis. Not bad at all.

The verdict: for me, it has a time and place. I like having it as an option. I think I'll like it particularly when I'm skiing alone.

I think I need to try it out some more.

BTW, anyone ever ski to the Beach Boys??? Cool!

Wendy,

I love my Giro fuse helmet---I listen to the Mohatella Queens, a South African dance group that really gives me great rhythmn and makes skiing more fun for me. I really like the helmet since I can still hear everything around me and can easily click it to mute all sound. When I am in a ski clinic and feel anxious---the music really helps me too.

Wow, what a deal!!!!

I got the ones for the Boeri because that's what we had in the shop, so I got them CHEAP! Also, I actually prefer my Boeri helmet over my Giro. But at that price, I'll get those, too!!!!

Thanks!!

If you want to shop around for a different helmet, I'll take that one off your hands.

I like silence, too...mainly because with a 10 month old and nearly 3 year old, there rarely is any. Still, I considered the Giro Fuse on SAC recently. But I don't have an iPod, MP3 player, etc (I'm so not part of this century... my brothers love to tell me I'm old since they're 18 and 22 and I'm a whopping 30). I may consider it further after reading this, though.... :D

Okay, I did pop for the Giro Fuse on SAC, arrival due tomorrow. I looked at the REI link, good deal, but I wonder about it from the reviews, which aren't stellar. I don't have an ipod but may call in favor on outstanding offer by DS to buy me a shuffle and do all the down/uploading. Sinatra, huh? Beach Boys? This is sounding better and better.

I'm usually a silence-type, but I'm frankly ready for a change, esp for quiet weekdays.

I have Giro G10 helmet with the tune ups although one of the ear pads has a part falling off. I just ordered the new kit from REI but it's on backorder which is fine. I've enjoyed them when I do wire up but with coaching and such I haven't done it much this year.

I have the Giro G9 with Tune Ups and I love it. I haven't had any problems with it, but only used it for a few days this year. (before injury) I will say that when I fell and was sitting there waiting for ski patrol to come and my husband to find me it was nice to put on some soothing mellow music and calm down.

We jury-rigged my Giro Sonic with the Giro 9 Tune Ups II early last year. I haven't had any issues with performance at all, although I broke the lapel clip off the controller last weekend, and the controller doesn't function with my new Sony Ericsson phone. Unless I'm racing (my race helmet isn't tunes compatible), you'll almost always find me "wired". The tunes calm the "bad" voices in my head and give me rythms to make turns to.....everything just becomes effortless and flowey.

However, I don't think the Beach Boys or Sinatra would do it for me. You'll find me jammin' to modern rock, grunge and indie with the occasional classic rock tune thrown in. Yup, I'm a 40-something head-banger.

I was just discussing helmets with the DBF last night, and told him that next season <our season is over> we're buying helmets... He responded with "I'm not wearing a helmet"... Mind you, this was his first year skiing.

I definately think that if I get him a helmet w/ tunes he'll be a bit more swayed.... He'll love the idea of skiing to the Wu Tang Clan... his fav.

Men...

I've been thinking about skiing to tunes but haven't really talked to anyone who's done it. Now you guys are starting to convince me! Frank Sinatra while skiing? That could be cool!

Glad to hear it! I can never ski to quiet music. It's always top 40 hip-hop (hahaha, I know) and loud rock. The heavier the rock, the faster I ski.

BUT there are some days where I just CANNOT find my groove with music in my ears. Those are the days where I need to talk myself through my turns... And the steep technical stuff is no good with music either. I like to hear myself, and the different kinds of snow.

Well, thanks to Wendy for starting this thread, I just bought a Smith helmet with Skull Candy wired for my iPod. My ski season is over  so I'll have to wait for next year to try it, but since I ski alone most times during the weeknights, it should be cool. And, if I prefer to hear the sound of my skis on the snow, I'll just mute it.

Now, I've got some months to create some skiing playlists!

Maybe we should start a thread with each of us posting a favorite song or two to create one huge Ski Diva playlist!

"podding" on the slopes

I'm with Wendy. Never thought I'd get wired to listen to music while skiing; mostly because I need my wits about me so that I can hear the dimwits around me. (of course, sometimes I am one of those as well...last week my silk glove liner slipped through the basket over a toilet at Powder Mountain and swirled on down into the land of effluence. If it made it that far!)
My DH got me an ipod for Christmas. Until last week, I had not used it while skiing.
In my previous life I was a professional singer and am a very serious listener of all styles of music. So, I put on some peppy Bach, jazz, rock, etc. Things to give me a sense of timing. OMG. I have a new friend. The music does indeed calm me and keep me from listening to alll those negative comments I make to myself. Skiing alone is not so lonely anymore.
