I bought new boots!!

I just had to come and tell everyone that I'm so excited I bought new boots!! My first pair of brand new boots, not "new to me". I got them from Summit Ski and Snowboard, aka The Ski Shop West, in Framingham, MA. It was a great experience with Geoff there. It was really busy when I got there but I still got helped quickly, and they were all so friendly anyway, and really appreciated that I came in with a relaxed "I'm not in a rush, I want to find the right boot" attitude.

I ended up with the Nordica Olympia Sport 12 in 24 () and I'm very happy. Hopefully I will remain so after skiing in them, but I an always go back for adjustments of course and they come with the heat moldable liners, which we didn't mold, so there is plenty of room for changes if needed.

Before the Nordicas, I tried:

Salomon Minx in 24.5: OK in the toes, but OUCH, these pinched my calves a lot. Even after he adjusted the buckles, the inside of my calf just was not happy.

Rossignol Sensor 90 (I believe...wasn't really paying attention to model, just fit, so I'm going off online photos here) in 24.5 and 25: Good on the calves, but my toes were smushed, and by the time I took them off, my pinkie toe was numb. No good. He had me try the 25 too just too see, but they were clearly too large in that size. Toes were barely touching the end and overall were definitely not right.

Head (OK, no sure which model this was, but they were silver/grey, so I think the Dream 12.5) in 24.5: My toes were immediately happy in these boots, but again the calves got pinched a lot.

:mad2: I thought women's boots were meant to FIT women's calves? My unisex boots were fine!

Anyway, my patience was rewarded when Geoff came back with the Nordicas. He'd wanted me to try them, but thought they didn't have them in that size. Right away I loved the way they hugged my heels and that they were clearly wide enough for my toes. I wore these for quite a while, with and without my SuperFeet, walking around the store, checking out the ski selection, and there were no signs of pressure points or numb toes :yahoo:.

So far I'm so happy I spent 2 hours and had the patience to find boots for me. I'm so excited to see what a difference it makes going from 26.0-26.5 Unisex boots to brand new foot-hugging 24s. He also mentioned that he wanted to get me into custom footbeds (he does them himself), but there was no hard sell, which I really appreciated. We'll see how the SuperFeet work out for now.

I can't wait to get these on the slopes! Going to take them to demo more skis. He thought I'd LOVE the Volkl Tierras, so I'm going to take that advice and definitely go demo them. Can't wait!!

Nothing like trying on a variety of boots to figure out which is "the one." And yes, you really need 2 hours to go through the process. Congratulations!

P.S. I used to live in Somerville myself.... in 1981 after I graduated from college, and again in 19, right before moving to Western MA. Lived in Cambridgeport in between.

It seems like everyone lived here after college! I've lived here since August after graduating in '06. I definitely prefer to live on this side of the river, even though I work on the other side.

Ya, I never worked in Cambridge either, always in Boston, and went to Northeastern for grad school. Great city to live in as a 20-something! I lived there in '81 and '89 (something got cut off from my post, above, when I edited it).

:focus:

Why the  for a size 24? Was your previous boot bigger? I think I'm the only person I know that got fit in the right size boot my first season skiing in '05, am still in that size (25.5). Seems like most folks start out in boots that are too big on them. Guess I got lucky with my bootfitter.

My used boots that I bought are 26.0-26.5. My toes touch the end before flexing, but I'd begun to noticed they felt loose in the heels. Still, I was shocked to end up in boots 2 sizes smaller, despite what everyone had said. I have flat feet, so I've had foot/shoe-related issues forever. Hope they are as comfy on the slopes as they did in the store!

that's a nice looking boot. The shop near me has Nordica as well. I really like the Speed Machine, just not the $600 price tag!

Do you know what the flex rating is on your boot?

Enjoy!

According to Nordica's website, they have a hard/soft adjustable rating of 75/65. Info I'm seeing online seems to say they're a good marriage of comfort and performance, so this should be good for me! My bigger boots are Nordicas and I also like the way they feel in the forefoot, so I was not terribly surprised that the Sport 12s fit well in that respect as well. They're definitely good for someone with a bit of a wider forefoot.

can't go wrong with comfort AND performance LOL Isn't that the best of both worlds? I'll see of they carry that model in the shop near me. I'm not exactly ready to start down that road right now though.

:laugh:I was just trying these on in my bedroom because they're so fancy and pretty and I can't wait to bring them to the hill and try them on demo skis...however I can see that my new tiny boots are going to be comically hard to get on! I guess I need to bring my boot fitter to the lodge with me...

Oh, Michelle,

They're not going to be too difficult to put on!

I found that my old boots, sz 26.5 were a lot more difficult to put on than my current ones -- sz 24.5! I did that a few times before I was able to get my boots out on the slopes too -- so exciting to have new boots, isn't it?

The liner materials in brand new boots are really slippery, I think you will find them no problem to get on.

I am a recent Nordica convert too, I love the fit.

I don't know, I was trying to put them on last night and it was SO hard! I'll have to perfect my technique! I'm so excited, I can't wait to get out on the slopes with these and see how much they change my skiing experience. :ski2:
