Hurricane Ike

I mentioned this on Dawning Chorus but for those who don't know my mom is just north of Houston and I'm worried sick at this point.

I just heard that Brennan's Restaurant, a historic building and fabulous restaurant has burned to the ground. I have memories of one of my favorite meals of all time there and own a copy of the cookbook signed by the chef.

It's not looking good down there and I wish I were with my mom to help her. If you pray can you say a little prayer for her, my step dad and all the people in harm's way?

Robyn, I hope your mom is safe. My mom lives in lower Manhattan and when 9/11 happened, I was worried about her and couldn't reach her by phone, so I can relate. She was ok and hopefully your Mom will be too.

And for those of you in the mid-western part of the US all the way from Texas to Chicago, stock up on gas because there are likely to be shortages and price spikes due to the oil refinery shutdowns....

Thoughts and prayers, Robyn. This is a really bad storm. I hope Houston's decision not to fully evacuate was a reasonable one. Is your mom staying in the area for the duration?

 

[Robyn]

Yes, mom is there for the duration. She's far enough north that she'll likely never be evacuated as she doesn't have to worry about flooding. I've been getting texts from her since around 2:30 this morning when they woke up due to the wind. They've lost power and some trees including mom's favorite huge palm tree. But, they are okay and that is what matters.

Mom is still getting nailed at noon her time. I just got a text from her that she is officially sick of this. But they're still okay for now.

Haven't heard from mom in 3 hours, can't raise her by text or phone. :(

Just finally heard from her. They're okay. Don't know about damage yet. Anyone have a shot of something strong for me? ;)

Thanks everyone. I still can't get mom on the phone but at least I know she's okay. I ran a couple of errands and picked up a chai tea and then spiked it with a little treat (hazlenut kahlua) after a little birdie told me it was good. My heart is starting to calm itself finally.

I don't think you're getting the storm yet as it's just barely getting into Arkansas. Thanks again for the prayers.

Yes Robyn ski&bfree and I are expecting major rain and wind Sunday afternoon and night. The tail end of the storm. But nothing like Houston. Glad to know everyone is OK. Like SnowHot says, those Diva's vibes are the best!! And gas went up here Friday to $1.40L or $ 5.60/US gal. Going to stay in tomorrow and clean house!

Oh, I don't doubt that you'll get some effects eventually but I don't think the rain you're getting now is part of Ike.

We've been taking the tail of storms brought on by previous tropical storms and Hurricanes. What we had today is coming through to Jilly and Ski&Bfree, I'm sure. We'll be getting the tail of Ike in about three days.
