Hunter Mountain - I have new found hope . . . .

Ok – usually I avoid Hunter Mountain at all costs for fear of being run down by a renegade out of control beginner – but I went there this past Friday and I have to tell you it was really fun! Not only did they have an abundance of (man made snow) but it was not crowded and you could not beat the price $25.

I have not been to Hunter in many years for just the reason you stated, although I have friends that say it is a great place mid week.
Maybe I'll have to give it another try.

I skiied at Hunter for many years and recently re-located to Colorado .... I'm somewhat embarassed to admit that I really miss the mountain, I miss going to the bar at the end of the day and seeing friends -there is a small town quality at hunter and in Tannersville that I really liked... but I do love the CO snow! :ski2:

Yeah, you know, Hunter's not bad. My main issue with it is that all the trails off the summit on the main face are kind of the same -- I get bored skiing there for more than a day. And last time I was there, the terrain park was teeeeerribly maintained. All the jumps onto the features were falling apart, the halfpipe hadn't been cut in who knows how long -- really disappointing and kind of unsafe.

But yeah, I've been saying for years that I'd like to hit Hunter up on a weekday to really be able to ski the place when it's not crowded, though, honestly, the weekend crowds often aren't as bad as people make them out to be.

I think the Catskills did unusually well conditions-wise this Thanksgiving weekend b/c there was not only the October blizzard (though I don't know how much of that stuck around) but also up to 13" of snowfall in some parts on Nov. 26th and it was ridiculously cold for a while. I was at Bellearye and skied some of the best early season freshies ever (uhm, after ignoring some "closed" signs). As far as the crowds go, having grown up in the area, we never really thought that skiing at Thanksgiving was a possibility, so maybe that's why crowds were manageable. I was at Hunter the day before or after x-mas (can't remember which) last year, and not only were few runs open, but the crowds were unbearable. And like RachelV, I was bored to tears after 2 hours.

I've heard really great things from Divas about Plattekill in the western Catskills and hope to try it out over x-mas.

Hunter BIG lift Card

Every year if you buy the Hunter “BIG mountain” (hahahahha) si card for $39 dollars then you get a free one day pass to use anytime. Then after that you get 25% off weekend and 50% off midweek lift tickets. It is still on sale now for $49 dollars – so a bad deal although I do try and avoid hunter on a weekend during the peak season.
