How Not to Carry Your Skis

Fantastic! I tell my visiting new skier friends that if I ever catch them using the Texas suitcase method they will be disowned. :p

My dad made us carry our own skis when we were little....and we did the Texas Suitcase!!! We thought he was MAGICAL and OH SO CREATIVE!!! (that was in 1969!!!!) Nothing "Gaper" about a man trying to teach his kids to be responsible for their own equipment!

It keeps the jacket clean. No way would I put filthy skis on a nice jacket's shoulder. :nono:

I do waiter's tray/Atlas. It requires arm strength!

That is so funny. The only thing is that near our gondola you need to remove the skis from the shoulder to avoid hitting people. So I then carry them by the toe piece. But a great PSA!!

Haha, this article is pretty funny! I wish I was innovative enough to think up the Texas Suitcase! I usually fulcrum, but sometimes it bothers my shoulder, so I just hold them both in one hand at the waist at my side.

So funny that I stole the gaper quote for my signature! Thanks for sharing!

good article. I can't do the fulcrum style, the weight of the skis and both parts of the bindings are too much weight behind me if it's all behind my shoulder. LOL because I was trying to do it last weekend and felt like I was being pulled backward. I need to center the weight of it all on my shoulder.

And, how would your skis get filthy? Mine only get snow on them! woo hoo

Road dirt. When I get home I wipe my skis to put them in an inside closet. The white paper towel turns black from dirt and grime.

I never rest my skis on my jacket.

I actually know & party with the guy who wrote this article. He's a really funny person, all around. Awesome skier too. Every week he has a "Where's Whacko" column in the local paper (his last name is Wackerle)....

And yes, I also love the "gaper" quote!!

Now, I know it's currently "correct" to have the skis like a seesaw on your shoulder and the tips FORWARD, but when I learned to ski 35 years ago, the tips were behind us. Since when is forward better and WHY? I mean you stand the skis with the tails down, just lean forward and pick them up! I don't have to swing them around in the air and decapitate someone in the process, then swing them around again to put them in the trunk (passthrough).

And my saying about gapers is, "If you care that someone thinks you're a gaper, you are one."

Great article, thanks for sharing. I'm relieved to know that I have picked up the "correct" way to carry my skis by observation ..phhhhew : ) I was picturing my friend doing the bear hug as I read it, too funny!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! the dreaded Texas suitcase!

Did I do it when I was a kid?

Does it look absolutely ridiculous to me now, and for the last 20 years? YES!

And I about got taken out at the knees Wed by someone using it. At least I expect to see (and watch for) skis at shoulder height. This woman clearly was so *comfortable* with her *suitcase* that she forgot about it; spun around in a crowded area, holding it; barely missed my knees; and whacked someone else in the calves!

And why is carrying your tips forward superior to carrying the tails forward??? :noidea:

That's why I like the twin tips more and more everyday...I do not even have to think about such things

(ok yah that was cheesy)

Typically you have more space between the front of your binding and the tip to place on your shoulder which is far more comforatable than placing the space between the bindings on your shoulder.

Not for me. I carry my skis tails forward, with the space between the bindings on my shoulder . Works for me!

Do you carry them with the edges on your shoulder or the flat part of the ski?
