How long do you stay sore for after a workout?

I have DOMS, which is weird. Delayed onset muscle soreness. If it's something I haven't done in awhile (first day skiing, first day of new workout), I'm fine the next day. But the day AFTER....

CBD lotion to the rescue. Stuff works (for me).

Interesting, I've never tried that, but I'd certainly give it a shot if others are finding success.

I just got some from my massage therapist and am giving it a try. He used it in my last massage, which was extremely relaxing. I wanted it on-hand for after skiing, since I don’t know how my ankle will react this year. What I have is marijuana-based, so I won’t be taking it on any vacations, but since we’re going to CO and Canada this year I can always get more of whatever is available locally. Although it might become cost-prohibitive to keep purchasing it and then leaving it behind!

I've just become very curious about this.

I just bought some CBD and Arnica salve in the Warren Country store (by SugarBush) I'm impressed. I banged my knee and this worked better than straight arnica. I also tweaked my back (darn old age) in the frozen bumps, it was GONE in the morning.. I'm all for it. Can I have a vat so I can step in and drench my whole body after some workouts? LOL

My coworker uses it for sciatica, and her mom has super bad knees (needs replacement) and they are both huge fans. Coworker is also interested in oral tinctures for other health issues. And her niece and nephew may be taking part in a trial - both have autism related to fragile-x.

I’ve just started looking into CBD oil/lotion. Coworker has used both hemp-based and marijuana-based and says she and her mom both find the marijuana-based more effective. Do you have one you like better than others?
Marijuana-based. Given as a gift to me by a (lovely) friend, who actually MAKES this stuff. Works really well on my tendonitis (as do capsaicin-based pads). Arnica doesn't do squat for me. I've tried several forms. Nada - placebo.

Good to know, thanks. I see @VickiK started a thread, so hopefully there will be more experiences to read about.

As much as we all want to be invincible, I thought this was a lovely read:

WOW. This is exactly what has happened to me with my hip. Thank you for posting--I feel less alone knowing I'm not the only one these things happen to. I have hiked the New England 67, but my days of climbing 4000ers are probably over. It's likely I'll never backpack again, and running is right out. I thank god I can still ski, but after our last BC ski tip, my hip has flared up again. It makes staying in some semblance of shape very difficult. Grateful for a new passion in making jewelry. Lots to learn!

But back to the OP. I am not at all impressed with the trainer's response to you. It's clear to me at least, that you're being pushed too hard. She should know this and should help you modify the sessions so you are not hurting so bad for so long. No offence to anyone, but all the lotions and creams won't help that level of soreness as you build your fitness. You just need to do it more gradually. If she can't help you, I might look for another trainer that will.

I went through a bout of hip pain recently. It turned out to be coming from my back--sacroiliaitis. PT, stretches, and hip stability exercises have really helped to get me back to workout mode.

I've done PT, stretching, and hip stability exercises, but nothing really seems to make it go away. I ended PT feeling about the same as when I went in--both times. My hip pain is in the crease of my leg in front. MRI, xray, etc show nothing. Sigh.

That’s gotta be super frustrating.

I suggest looking for a new PT. I had some deep perifomis pain that would not go away with PT. Chiropractic and massage were temporary fixes. I finally found a PT who was a hip and pelvis specialist. The PT I did with this guy was way different than the usual stretchy band hip strengthening they give you. I'd ask around. This guy was able to fix what I had not had relief for for almost 10 years.

I have a cream with the same combo...use it everyday after gardening, hiking, skiing...I think it works wonders!

Interesting that Arnica doesn't work for you @MaineSkiLady I've been using it for decades and have eliminated bruises in very short time. I also ate the internal arnica when I've broken Bones and grew bone at 56yrs old. my Ortho was very impressed (I ramped up Vit D & Calcium too)
.
I have given my favorite arnica concoction "The Rub" to several people who had sprains and bruises achey knees, so far it worked on all EXCEPT my Ski Director with an implant in his knee- made it hurt more. When I get banged up for me the bruises never go purple they disappear. I have torn MCL's and arthritis in my knees and I put it on after showering on ski days and feel like I have new knees in the morning. It breaks up deep tissue dead blood cells. Maybe it's all in our heads. I'll take it, better than the pain. Likewise, I feel no affects from Loratabs- zero nada. Aspirin works better for me for pain. Just goes to show how our bodies individually react to different things.

@newboots word of caution is correct!! Since it is not regulated there can be different amounts in different batches, who knows where the CBD comes from. My first try came from a friend I was skiing w/in Telluride- I fell on the concrete was not pretty and I thought I wouldn't be able to ski. whether it was placedo mind over matter or the product it made the pain go away so I didn't care. My DH ordered some oils online for sleep and pain and I used the pain formula a couple times - One for a wicked migraine and migrane went away- I'll take it. I have taken so few pharmaceutical drugs my whole life I'd rather do a plant based, homeopathic product. Odd that I find that safer- guess those side effects they mention on TV have scared me.

Honestly, I'm the opposite, but perhaps it's because I work in drug development. I'd much prefer to know every possible effect a compound could have on me and make an informed decision knowing what I think I'm taking is what I'm taking than going the homeopathic route where you really don't have any clue what the possible effects are both now and down the road.. I also dislike that products can be very misleading as to what you are actually getting. I've personally tested brands of vitamins where what the bottle says is NOT what's in it. Usually a pretty benign thing, but sucks if you think you are getting something you're not!

That being said, I am still interested in the new stuff coming out with CBD. MA is pretty heavily regulating the recreational market, so in many cases I think you'll at least be able to know you are getting the correct potency in lroducts and they are not adulterated with certain key things.

I have not taken oral CBD, but have heard that Charlottes Web is the only researched strain. I have friends that have children with seizures and the Charlottes Web has significantly reduced the seizures. The FDA recently approved it for that use.

I've also heard that our bodies are full of CBD receptors...much research is needed!

I also worked with a hip specialist (or someone working under him, who was also very experienced) at a clinic that works with the Celtics. I'm curious what types of exercises? I did a lot of bridge variations, plus other types of strengthening. Thanks.

So as an update, I am doing better with my soreness. I think the trainer we have has also kept up our workouts while making some adjustments that help the specific participants like durations of each exercise and how long in between rests for HIIT. Still have soreness after workouts, but not anywhere near how bad it was the first couple of weeks. This week I officially joined the gym in my work building too since we get a large discount so I can go more often than just company class options and use the equipment as well. I agree that once per week just isn't enough to get moving even though I've gotten away with it previously haha. My first day back to work after the holidays was Wednesday which is when I joined. Since then I did a really great/challenging yoga class on Wednesday on my lunch hour, then the trainer hour like usual on Thursday at lunchtime, and then yoga this morning before work. Trying to just keep going rather than overthink or make excuses for not going haha. Hopefully I can continue this in the lead up to diva west and beyond of course. I'm a little sore in my lower body today, butt/abs/hip flexors. Going to yoga this morning helped a lot as far as soreness goes though. Really like when I can workout at lunch mid day, there are lots of classes offered then, so I plan to check a bunch out as time goes on. I feel like it's motivating to take a break from work and also get it done then versus having to get up extra early to go in the morning or deal with it after a full day. I've never had that option before, hard to make excuses when it's right downstairs. I also verified that the saunas are inside of the women's locker room specifically, so not co-ed at least, plan to try that out sometime soon.

DH is a PT and he complains all the time about most PTs being just plain bad. When I had my labrum in my should repaired in 2017, he didn't want to treat me because studies show family members will either over or under treat. He initially had me being treated by another PT. After 3 weeks I told him she was garbage (I had PT in the past for other injuries) and I wanted to be treated by him. He was much better and now I have recovered almost full range of motion.

DH is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist so now that I am back on the horse and working out on a regular basis again, he has been giving me training advise. I feel like if I'm not sore, I didn't work out enough. Apparently that's wrong thinking and you may have been over worked. If you are really sore, if you workout the next day, it will help to move the lactic acid out of your muscles. HIIT is one of go to workouts. I have added deadlifting to my workouts and have discovered how weak my lower back really is but it had improved my skiing.

DH also says that research is now showing that stretching before you workout is bad for you, diminishes performance and impedes muscle growth. I've stopped stretching after my warm-ups.

https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/03/reasons-not-to-stretch/

I have also added leg blaster, which is another level of hell. Highly recommend it.
