The older you get the slower the wipeouts take? I mean, the process. Somehow during the actual spill you have time to think, "Damn, this is gonna hurt."

Just a couple of funny stories (no one was seriously hurt). We were in STeamboat last week. A few times my SIL and I got to ski (just the girls). One day she was rammin' down a run (quite fast) when she turned one way and her ski stuck in a rut or something so she went flying. I skied up and asked if she was okay. She said....."I think I just peed my pants." :laugh:Of course I am laughing so hard I can hardly stand and she says, "If you're not careful you're going to pee your pants too."

A few days later we're cruising down a bump run (mind you I'm a bump virgin). I come over one, stick my skix in the next one, and vault face first into the bump. Youch! My SIL (standing at the bottom - it was a short stretch between cat tracks) yells up the mountain..... "Did you pee your pants??":ROTF:

OMG, remind me to spend a few extra minutes in the bathroom if I ever get to ski with you! LOL

Well, if you're around 50 or more, it won't matter whether you've recently been to the bathroom or not.... I can so relate.

I second that thought!

Hilarious stories Marge, thank you for sharing. So glad nobody was seriously injured.

I don't know that it's an age thing. I haven't wrecked much skiing lately, but I know with biking - sometimes they seem so slow motion I can have an entire conversation with myself before I hit the ground... and other times I'm upside down in a heap before I even knew anything was going wrong. I think it depends on the type of fall.

But it's funny nonetheless!

my latest wreck was putting the car into a snow bank last weekend. The road took a 90 degree left turn, the car did not. The entire even unfolded in slow motion, with enough time for me to tell my husband "are you ready for this? We're not going to stop." And still time for him to yell at me for driving too fast, even though I wasn't. Luckily the snow bank was fresh and not a block of ice. I got out of the car laughing my butt off, my husband, not so much.

Then I had to call our friends and explain why we were running so late.

OMG, thanks for the laugh!!!

Speaking from someone who has hit 40, never miss a chance to take a nature break

As for the slo mo crashes......
uh huh!
I used to just go with it, now I find myself protecting part of my body with thoughts like......."Oh no! I can't break my arm, I have to do invoicing this week!!"

"Not my leg! I have to shovel sidewalks!"

Those thoughts never used to be a thought.

Heck you don't need to be 50 OR 40! You just need to have had a baby!

Seriously. I haven't been able to jump on a trampoline since 22...

That's the whole reason I haven't tried snowboarding. I just keep thinking, "I cannot be without my wrists/hands for an extended period of time." :(

Slo mo fall...yes, just today. Had loads of fresh snow yesterday and last night and heading back to the station after a great day out and of course all the kids want to take the "secret passage" through the trees. Following a friend who disappears around a corner and I think "that looks like a very low tree branch but that is where her trail leads, hmmm, where DOES the trail go, hmmm, I think this is a good place to fall, hmmm, snow very deep can I get up???, hmmm, whack, yes that was a low tree branch, close eyes...oh *&%#!". At least I was going too slow and the snow was too deep and soft to hurt myself. But digging my skies out of the snow... Oh ya, I've passed 40 and have a kid, fortunately I managed not to pee my pants.:D

Ha. Pretty much all of my more spectacular falls go in slow-motion for me. The most recent was falling off my bike onto the road for the first time, watching the asphalt come up at my face and just thinking, "Oh man, this is probably going to hurt." And it did! But not as much as I thought. But definitely more than snow.

Bwauahahaha!! This is EXACTLY like every accident I've ever had!

You know it's going to happen, and you start talking yourself through it ... it's even better when you're saying it out loud, rather than in your head, and the people around you are wondering what the hell you're doing. I have a tendancy to that; 9 times out of 10 when a thought comes to mind it forgoes the filtering process and heads right out of my mouth.

Oh man, I can soooooooooo relate to that one!!!:bag:

One of my co-workers and I were walking down the parking lot to our lift of the day. All of a sudden, both of us started to have our feet slide slowly under us and they wouldn't stop. I did hear my self say, "cr*p, I'm gonna fall", so I just started getting low and ready for the fall. It was hard, but I was OK. My co-worker, who's more than half my age, went down harder. I guess she didn't speak to herself. But, we're both OK. We ended up laughing the rest of the way down, and yes, I did think I pee my pants!!

Had one of those yesterday!

X-c skiing in the park, the snow got scraped away as half of my ski glided over it... The root underneath stopped the ski from moving forward but my body didn't!!! :(

As I hurl forward and downward to meet the ground, I had time to think to myself "Ooops, I'm falling, let's pull the arms in so I don't dislocate my elbow... Argh too late to do that. Let's just twist around a bit so I land on my shoulder, QUICK!"

Ended up in a heap with skis crossed and poles trapped under my skis! But all my bones and ligaments still attached and of normal length.

My worst fall so far this season totally wasn't my fault (is it ever - ha!). I was standing at the top of the mountain waiting for our group to regroup when one of the fellows skied very slowly over the back of my skis. In his defense, he must be close to two feet taller than me (I'm really short and he's really tall) and I think didn't even see me. Anyway, the skis caught and I fell, very slowly, backwards, with my legs kind of splaying out to each side. All I could think of as I was going down was "This isn't good - I'm not a young person - this could really hurt my knees, etc. etc." Fortunately, one binding released and I survived pretty much intact. It's at times like that I'm glad I have a little flexibility thanks to regular yoga classes. Only sore bit afterwards was one spot in my abs - I think I must have pulled a muscle or something and couldn't do a sit-up for a couple of weeks. Didn't affect my skiing though.

Other scary fall I had recently was again not my fault. But this one was so fast that one moment I was skiing along minding my own business (fairly fast), and the next I was on the snow with both skis off - a snowboarder had crashed into me from behind. I told him he should be more careful - and his reply? Something along the lines of "Well, we have trouble slowing down." D'uh. Do some of these kids have no familiarity with the Alpine Code? Come to think of it, that was my second close encounter with a boarder this year. The other incident was a youngish girl who hit me, but at a much slower speed. At least she apologized - said she was trying to go around me. Now, I'm not criticizing all boarders, but evidently some of them should TAKE A LESSON.

That's why one of the first things a good snowboard instructor will teach you is how to fall correctly - very similar to the tuck and roll you do when playing volleyball and going for a low ball...

I just can't take that chance. I'm self-employed so any injury like that and I'm OUT. No unemployment, no disability, and NO ski money. I'm living vicariously through my daughter.

Some day maybe. I just remember working in the ER that all those who came in from our local hill were first timers and they almost always broke the wrist or shoulder. Either one I can't afford.
