Hip Pain

Had a hard fall on my right hip a few days ago. Not skiing, exactly. But walking in ski boots to our car in the very icy parking lot of our condo. Didn't quite realize how painful it was until I got really stiff on the ride back home a couple of days later.

Made an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon who did my knee replacement several years ago. Unfortunately I can't see him until the second week of March. Will this require a hip replacement? DH has had both hips replaced and tells me that I have nothing to fear. And that I'll be functional fairly quickly.

I am surviving but not doing well, and I have stopped my various workout routines such as walking and going to the gym. I'll see how I feel about skiing as I have another trip to Mammoth planned in early March... Or I might suggest that my DH go up alone.

Also figuring out the least painful ways to sleep and to sit in my recliner watching TV. I don't normally watch much TV, preferring to read or play on my phone. Of course the Olympics will provide a lot of entertainment for the next 2 weeks.

Not sure if I will be able to ski again this season. I may give it a try in early March before my appointment. We've barely used our passes yet this season, mainly due to weather in California and lack of snow in Colorado. Now this!!!

Whine, whine, whine...What's a Skibum to do???

Did you have an x-ray to rule out a fracture?

I have not. I am not dysfunctional though I am in pain. I don't seem to be swollen and I don't see any external bruising.

However, I have been considering that I should visit Urgent Care tomorrow or Monday to get that done.

Thanks to both of you for the suggestion. It's dumb at my advanced age and with my osteoporosis to wait a month to see my Orthopedic Surgeon. And especially to consider skiing again before my March appointment.

I just made an appointment with my local Urgent Care to be seen tomorrow.

I’m glad to hear that. It’s really best to rule a fracture out. You might consider having the images sent to your surgeon, too. I hope you’re managing the pain ok. :frown:

Is there an Ortho Urgent Care in your area? My experience has been that while a regular urgent care can take an x-ray, they don't necessarily know how to interpret the results.

After one incident (simple fall off a bike) the regular urgent care people told me to go to the ortho urgent care down the road. The ortho PA took a look at the x-ray and could manipulate my wrist in a much more useful way to get a good diagnosis. Luckily for me, nothing was broken. I'd waited a couple days before going to urgent care. After that, if I did something that meant getting it checked out I went straight to the ortho urgent care. In this case, it's run by the same ortho surgery company I used after blowing an ACL in 2012.

Hoping for the best outcome.

Yes, that is my concern, that they won't be able to assess the images correctly. Unless there's a really obvious fracture.

Yup. Xray first, but don't be shy about visiting a chiropractor in your travels. I'm finally using one after a 2 year battle with hip pain (GlutealTendinopathy). Unwinding all sorts of dysfunction movement patterns and muscle imbalances now that thre tendons are healed (I hope). I always use to go to a chiropractor, but we moved and blah...blah... you know how that goes.

Oooh, one of the friends we met? Tell her we’re sending her healing wishes!
Yes, it was Carrol, and you have met her. She hosted an apres at her Tahoe City house.
Thanks I'll let her know. I wasn't with her at the time as another friend was skiing with her and ahead. She waited and waited, then called Carrol. Someone had stopped to help and they called ski patrol. Carrol went down in a sled, was evaluated by ski patrol, and transported to Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. A huge bummer and she was in a lot of pain.

You can’t rule out out spinal issues with hip pain. Hubby just spent three weeks out of service (while we were supposed to in Japan) because of severe leg and hip pain. He couldn’t walk 25 yards. We ended up in the ER one night, he was in so much pain he does not remember about 3hrs. Chiropractors, physical therapy, X-rays, Dr. recommended MRI, but insurance refused to pay. We paid out-of-pocket. MRI revealed compression at L3/4. He got two shots in the back last week and has returned to work.. I’ll never put off the MRI again. The cost of out-of-pocket MRI was 1/5 what insurance would have been charged.

All good advice. I fell on the ice walking in the hood several years ago and whacked my arm (but didn't spill my coffee). I thought it was a "stinger" and let it be for a couple days. I actually thought it was my wrist b/c that was where the pain was radiating. Nope. It was an elbow fracture. Three days before a western ski trip, of course . . . I got to know a lot of Park City bars on that trip.
