Hey SuperMoe!

I'd like to pick your brain about skiing the UP. We are in North Dakota, and try to get to northern MN a couple of times a year, but the UP isn't much farther away. Here's where we usually go, because it's a 4-hours drive and we have friends in the area:

What would you recommend in the UP? We are all strong intermediate/advanced skiers. I'm not crazy about crowds or nightlife (our kids are 13). Good instructors are a plus!

We typically go for a long weekend, skiing 2 or 3 days.

Thanks!

Ann

LOL...not a ski expert, but here is some info. Don't know exactly what type of skiing you like (groomed, backcountry, etc)

Mt. Bohemia, which is located in the tip of the Keweenaw has rave reviews as far as being the most like skiing in the Rockies.

We've recently had some scuttlebutt about development/commerce people saying they should make it "easier", etc, but a bunch of people have written letters saying that they drive 10 hours just to come here because it is some really challenging skiing, etc.

The same group owns the Porcupine Mountain ski area "The Porkies". Some people are complaining because they've taken out a bunch of runs and added many more backcountry, but they have snowcat skiing, so they haul you up, etc. The Porkies is cheap, I think passes are 2 for 1, which means it costs 2 people $44 to ski for the day.

There is no (night) life at these places! Great views of Lake Superior though.

Located in the Ironwood area (border of WI/MI) are Blackjack, Big Powderhorn, and Indianhead. Big Powderhorn and Indianhead are owned by the same group and sometimes they have some good deals. For example, for $48, you can buy a one day pass to both places. That way, you could ski the AM at Powderhorn, then drive about 10 minutes and ski the afternoon at Indianhead. When you are at Indianhead on the West side, you can actually see Blackjack Ski area. We drove over to Blackjack, but it looked kind of boring to me.

This link will take you to the links for both Big Powderhorn and Indianhead.

Once again, this is the UP, no nightlife!

The one that I would like to try (and some other Divas could help you) is Whitecap. It's about 20 minutes from Ironwood in Wisconsin.

I've attached this link...which has links to all the above places I've mentioned.

So, a good plan might be: Get a place in Ironwood. Ski at Whitecap the first day, then Indianhead the 2nd day, then hit Big Powderhorn and head for home after that. They are all relatively close to each other. [Sounds like a good plan for me...next year]

If you want some more serious backcountry-type stuff, then go to Bohemia, and hit Porkies or one of the other above places on the way home.

Sorry, this is not much help, but maybe the links will give you more info. Plus, some of the other divas (MSL for one) have skied more at these places and might have better info for you.

Thanks so much! We're not backcountry people (yet, at least - give my kids a few more years).

I picked on you when I saw your post in "home mountain", and you listed all of these places.
