Last season a few Ikon Pass roots implemented reservations to better control crowd size:

Snoqualmie
Taos Ski Valley
Jackson Hole

This winter, they'll be joined by four more:

Aspen Snowmass
Big Sky
Loon Mountain
Brighton

What do you think?

For those of us who plan trips out west well in advance, having to make an Ikon reservation is not that big a deal. It was only the weekend that was any issue for Taos last season. Bill forgot to make reservations early enough and couldn't get Sunday a few weeks before the trip in early Feb 2022. He was going to use the MCP for that Sunday if necessary so it didn't really matter. As it turned out, he was able to get an Ikon reservation later. Everyone else had no problem making Ikon reservations for that Ski Week.

In general, there are usually more spots released about a week before a given week.

Better to have a reservation system in place than to have to scramble after the season starts because the lift lines are too long for whatever reason. Impossible to really predict snow conditions, the staffing situation, and actual demand this far in advance. Since a reservation system exists from a software and operational standpoint for Ikon, makes sense to get it set up. Even if most days it turns out to be no problem because there are plenty of slots left even a day before.

Here's the list of Ikon resorts that will require reservations for 2022-23 arranged by region. They are all Ikon Partners, not Alterra resorts. Most are Boyne resorts.

The Summit at Snoqualmie - Boyne
*Big Sky - Boyne
Jackson Hole
*Aspen Snowmass
*Brighton - Boyne
Taos Ski Valley
*Loon Mountain - Boyne

* added for 2022-23

Learned that for Taos they are unlikely to cancel an Ikon pass if someone doesn't show up for a day for which a reservation was made for at least 30 days. Sounds like Ikon Partners are free to come up with their own policy regarding no shows for reservations. Just as a Partner can decide whether or not to require Ikon reservations.

Jackson Hole is also going to require reservations for MCP holders. Pretty sure that's a first for the MCP.

Reservations are made on the JH website.
