Hemp Oil and other CBD/THC/Marijuana Products

I was in a pretty serious car accident last summer (not my fault) and had some ongoing back issues as a result. Though I went the traditional western medicine route for much of my therapies, I did have cupping, dry needling and was recommended to obtain some THC/CBD salve. Its not legal in my state, but I did travel to one where it was and purchased a salve by Mary's - its the Compound, and has about a 50/50 THC/CBD blend in a shea base, but has very small amounts of menthol and camphor. It has a slight smell and minimal cooling effect - if BioFreeze is a 10 on the icy hot stink and sting scale, Mary's is a 1. It does help, absorbs quickly and is non-greasy. If you've ever tried a lidocaine patch, its about the same pain relieving effect. Definitely does NOT get you high in this topical application, though I am sure it would result in a positive THC test. Price is on the high side - The 1 oz jar was around $50 before all the taxes, but it lasts FOREVER. I use it pretty regularly and it is still at least 1/3 full. https://marysmedicinals.com/product/transdermal-compound/

I've heard very good things about Mary's Medicinals, too. They're one of the brands exploring cannabinoids beyond THC and CBD, like CBN.

If anyone is curious as to whether the CBD salve had any effect on (my) planter fasciitis, the answer unfortunately is no. I did think it helped the first time, but it didn't help subsequent times, so I wonder if I had a placebo effect at first.

It has really helped mine...I am using 200 mg and apply 2x a day.

I think relying on regular hemp balms and hoping they’ll do the job is kind of hit-or-miss. I’ve messed around with a few and most just didn’t cut it long-term. If you’re dealing with stubborn pain, I’d rather go through a proper setup like a medical cannabis clinic where they actually tailor things to what you need

I use a commercially available product that helps with pain from osteoarthritis. I hate the smell on my hand and this product comes in a stick...think round deodorant stick.

Last night I was is pain and couldn't get to sleep. Got up and used the same "salve" in the jar form, applied to my knees and then went into the kitchen to wash my hands with Dawn dish soap. No residue left on hands. No smell and sweet dreams.

I've used various locally made (Vermont!) salves and muscle rubs, some of which have CBD oil in them, all of which have some combination of herbs and essential oils (eg. wintergreen oil, frankincense, arnica, et al.). On occasion, the CBD ones seem miraculous, for muscle and arthritis pain. Other times, just another soothing rub. I'm told they may be more effective rubbed in when the skin is warm (eg after a warm shower), and massaged for a while. Like Jilly, I have found great relief from a bit of these salves in the middle of the night (as I recover from my recent knee replacement!)

THC doesn’t do a whole lot for pain relief. That’s more for like… helping you to get high!
There are CBD based topicals (lotions) that help with pain and don’t get you intoxicated. they will have small traces of THC most of the time, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get high from it.

P.S. Since my first post on this thread, I found some good products for the occasional muscle soreness and sleep.

Vicki, I need something to massage into my very tight ITB band. What do you recommend?

My ski buddy gave me some Hemp Emu cream to try a couple years ago. I bought some and use it for pain, swelling and tightness on the leg I had ACL surgery on 10 years ago, anywhere else I’m sore or tight. It works well and doesn’t have a strong smell. They sell it in cream and a roll-on. I prefer the cream because I can rub it in and go. The roller takes longer to dry. They also have gummies, but I haven’t tried them. They have sales pretty regularly. Their 4th of July sale had half off cream and roller. They should have a good sale for Labor Day coming up.

I wish my favourite was in a more "roll on" than "paste on". I just don't want it on my hands as it does smell. But it works, so I go with the flow.

I’ve just done some online researching. The Hemp Emu cream looks a bit too processed for my liking. I looked at a number of Vermont producers (buy local!) and reviewed ingredients. There’s quite a difference between the various carrier oils and essential oils used. Some offer a choice of smell. I decided to go with Hillside Botanical’s “Betty’s Balm“. https://www.hillsidebotanicals.com/product-page/betty-s-balm-600mg-pain-relief-balm . It has some anti-inflammatory essential oils as well as the CBD. I was gifted a similar product from them at Xmas (not available now) which was not as high in CBD, but still effective.

FYI, like so many companies, if you sign up to subscribe and wait a minute, you’ll get a welcome email with a 15% off code. That covered the shipping cost.

will follow up in chat or IRV...but I've used or still use:
Topicals: CBD/arnica blends, Penetrex, Homeopathic remedies like Traumeel, arnica creams
Theragun massager: PT recommended this for my sister, she uses mine.

I wonder if wrapping or KT tape would help.

Good luck with this. I was chatting w/ @skibum4ever yesterday and was talking about that Theragun option. My older sister has ITB issues and says it helps her. I hope @skibum4ever reports back on her experience with hers. Here's a link to a SD thread where there's more discussion of it: Theragun - Use/Need?. It's in the Divas Only section, so you may not have access to it until you reach the magic number of posts.

I've used CBD as a transdermal patch with good results for post skiing soreness and stiffness. They don't smell bad (a bit minty/menthol) and you avoid the greasy mess too. You can put it directly on the site of the soreness/pain or sometimes I put it on my back for just general body soreness, and they last about 12 -24 hours.
